    gps doesn't matter where you are. the question you are looking to ask is will there be maps abroad and i am assuming bing maps as well as hopefully google maps will work abroad with internet access.

    Any GPS apps that load the map data onto the device's memory so it doesn't use data/will work where a data connection is unavailable?

    It would be great if GPS worked without a data plan or if you could download map data while tethered. At that point, I would definitely mount the playbook in my car.

    Why would they do that? Cell companies want money for data, maps use data

    Besides, nobody ever went on a road trip outside cell coverage. Ever. Just doesn't happen.

    There is an internal GPS chip.

    A lot of data plans have tethering included. Mine doesn't because I have an unlimited data plan. That said, the gps should work through tethering.
