PB doesn't show up under Network
I am on Windows 7 64bit and my PB won't show up anymore. In the past (before OS 2.0.1) it usually showed up). Now I can't get it to show up under "Network". I don't know if its a windows problem or a PB problem. If I put the IP in in run then it opens up, and when I run an IP scanner, the PB shows up, but it still doesn't come up under "Network" in My Computer. I can't figure out why. This is annoying because every time I want to send a file to my PB I have to walk over to the Playbook and check the IP.
Thanks for any help!GIT-R-DONE - 05-19-2012, 08:15 PM #4
Have you tried the beta dm? Updated drivers?

Too bad. It's a very nice feature. It's almost like RIM doesn't bother to test it's updates.
EDIT: I went ahead and mapped my playbook as a network drive. Now at least it shows up...Until the DHCP server decides to give it a new IP..

You don't have to use the IP. Even if the Playbook does not show up under network you can use its device name to access it. The name will be resolved to the IP address in the moment you use it.
If you have never changed the device name it should be still "playbook". So you can type in Windows Explorer:
\\playbook
You can also ping the PB using its name to check that you have connectivity. Open a cmd-Window and type:
ping playbook - 05-20-2012, 09:00 AM #11
You can even run "net view \\playbook" (drop the quotes, use your PB's network name) at the command prompt and you should see the media and certs shares.

what if you have changed the name and don't remember the previous?

Thanks, but I don't want to give my PB a reserved IP.
I will try the name way, and the see if a can map the network drive that way.
EDIT:
This is the best solution. With this you don't need to worry about IP addresses at all. I just mapped the "media" folder on the PB as a network drive and it should come up every time I log in. Thanks for your help!Last edited by dave1701; 05-20-2012 at 10:09 AM.

Then you can look your device name up in your PB settings. Swipe down from the top when you are in the main menu. This will open the PB settings. Go to:
Storage & Sharing -> Network Identification -> Properties
There you can see the device name in the field labeled "Tablet Network Name" and you can also change it if you want to.
PS:
As soon as there is more than one Playbook in the same network (subnet) you should give every PB a unique name.Last edited by tw_; 05-20-2012 at 10:09 AM.

Ah, ok. I misunderstood you. There is a network device name cache in Windows which stores name to IP address mappings. You can display the cache content in a cmd-Window using:
nbtstat -c
But if you change the device name the cache is updated quickly with the new name. After some timeout the cache is deleted anyway if there is no network traffic to the device. - 05-20-2012, 11:32 AM #19

Then the cache timed out.
Try pinging your playbook from the cmd-Window:
ping playbook
(Replace playbook with the current device name of your PB of course.)
You should see ping responses from the current IP of your PB. Afterwards run a nbtstat -c. If you see the mapping name resolution works and you can use \\playbook from explorer to access its files. (Again replace playbook with the device name.)
If it does not work you probably need to open some ports in the firewall of your Windows PC. - 05-20-2012, 11:47 AM #21

Yea i have the 7.1 but thats not the issue 7.1 works fine for me.
My issue is my playbook does not show up on my Pc's Network, which makes it easy to transfer files back and forth without cables.I waited...It launched...Im still waiting...

Yup. But I presume the pb assigned the Tablet Network Name:
PLAYBOOK-BA99"
(again where 99 is a numeric two-digit value). I don't know if revealing the real name makes any difference? But I don't believe that I assigned it although I may have agreed to it during the initialization process.
Since my 32gig should return from Rim tomorrow (hopefully solved of Standby battery loss issues), I will see what it's name is. - 05-20-2012, 12:03 PM #25
On the pb in bluetooth, properties mine is the default name of playbook-****
Bbmore, you do have file sharing on? Did you use a password for that on the pb?
Edit: I asked about new dm because it installs the newest drivers.Last edited by kbz1960; 05-20-2012 at 12:07 PM.
