Default OS 2.0 and exciting HDMI Output News

RIM CEO says "Some of the key enhancements that we expect to be delivered in the PlayBook 2.0 release are... ---- the ability to enjoy videos on your TV without the need to purchase additional system components."

Research In Motion's CEO Discusses Q2 2012 Results - Earnings Call Transcript - Seeking Alpha

This is super exciting news although I am not completely clear.
Can anyone let me know what 'enhancement' is he referring i.e. any idea how this 'enhancement' would differ from the current version.

I am thinking DLNA, or RIM will send us a micro HDMI or anything that will make it possible without additional purchase.

Pretty sure this is just referring to the BB Video service coming in the update. Will allow to stream videos to the PB thus to your TV via HDMI. Doubt any "enhancements" for the output directly.

He does specifically mention HDMI, which most modern TVs have. A cable is not considered a component so he is not technically being liberal with the truth.

I think it meant you didn't need to buy another device, such as AppleTV for example.

You will probably still need a HDMI cable, as I don't think a cable is considered a system component.

I read this to and wondered at the same thing. I already can output via HDMI to my TV any videos; everything looks, works great. I just presumed that he was referring to the video store.
To RIM haters - Why dont you go find a parade and rain on it.

I suspect that is the case. Maybe he forgot or doesn't know that playbook can already stream videos to TV.

what he meant is.... in order to watch hdmi on ipad u have to purchase apple tv... or purchase some adaptor to go from apple's proprietary connector to hdmi... u dont have to go pay 800 dollars to do this...

From a NY Times article today....

"Mr. Lazaridis said that RIM would also open an online video store for the PlayBook. While the powerful processor in the device makes it adept at playing video, streaming movies and television programs onto it can be frustrating."

It would be great if we could get DLNA AND AirPlay support - so that we could ditch that HDMI cable and stream to our existing equipment....

I too am just super excited about 2.0. Why not be? I bought the PlayBook because I liked it, and new improvements mean I'll probably like it more. Not gonna complain about the company I already paid my money to updating my device....

Airplay and such isn't suitable for HD. I'll take a cable with high quality transfer any day.

What I do hope is you will be able to put these streaming movies (or anything else for that matter) in presentation mode. That could be an enhancement.

You don't have to buy another component, but you can buy the Blackberry Cyclone
