Do you turn the PB off or let it go into standby when not in use? Is there much of a difference batterywise?

Try it and see. And hour or two should tell you a lot.

Also other threads suggest the battery drops noticeably if the unit is left sleeping overnight as opposed to being off.

I don't have one yet, so I can't report personal experience...
