New 64gb PB just received shows Total Storage = 59.4gb and Free Storage = 55.2gb. Nothing additional installed or downloaded other than Screen Helper Lite app.

Is this correct and normal? Seems like almost 9gb is unaccounted for.

As with any device housing its own operating system it uses space on that host device.
You computer or laptop will also show similar storage pattern, its same with the PB.

The space that you dont have (out of the total 64GB) is used by the PB OS and files needed for the PB to function.

It's the way many OS's show space. For instance a windows computer will not show a 500gb hard drive as 500gb it will say it is less. The rest is the OS and apps that are pre installed.

So am I then to believe that the OS will take 9g off of a 16g tablet as well? I sure as hope not.

9 gig off the top for the OS doesn't sound right to me either.

    From Wikipedia, Quote:

"Since the early 2000s most consumer hard drive capacities are grouped in certain size classes measured in gigabytes. The exact capacity of a given drive is usually some number above or below the class designation. Although most manufacturers of hard disk drives and flash-memory disk devices define 1 gigabyte as 1000000000bytes, software like Microsoft Windows reports size in gigabytes by dividing the total capacity in bytes by 1073741824, while still reporting the result with the symbol "GB". This practice is a cause of confusion, as a hard disk with a manufacturer-rated capacity of 400 gigabytes might be reported by the operating system as only "372 GB", for instance.

The difference between units based on SI and binary prefixes increases as a semi-logarithmic (linear-log) function—for example, the SI kilobyte value is nearly 98% of the kibibyte, a megabyte is under 96% of a mebibyte, and a gigabyte is just over 93% of a gibibyte value. This means that a 300 GB (279 GiB) hard disk is indicated only as 279 GB. As storage sizes increase and larger units are used, this difference becomes even more pronounced. Some legal challenges have been waged over this confusion such as a suit against Western Digital.[5][6] Western Digital settled the challenge and added explicit disclaimers to products that the usable capacity may differ from the advertised capacity.[6]"

No, you will see about 13-14Gb free space.

Yes. I know what ill have with a 16g I'm just trying to figure out why the op is being told the os is taking 9g off of his storage.

In my words I am trying to say to the OP that "Total Storage = 59.4gb and Free Storage = 55.2gb" seems OK to me...

So, 64gb really means a 59.4 tablet. And of that 59.4, 4.2 is OS and overhead, leaving 55.2 free. Similar percentage reductions apply to the 16 and 32 models.

Seems to me to call it a 64gb tablet is a little disingenuous. (I think that was the point of jakeslu's wikipedia reference, above.)

All hard drives use 1000 instead of 1024. So, yes, all '64GB' hard drives are in fact 59.4GB in that notation. You are not being ripped off by RIM, just the industry.
    You were given around 64 000 000 000 bytes which is 59.4GB.

I'm surprised this is the first you've noticed it. It's much more noticeable in 1TB drives that are actually 0.9TB .
