Default New PB that is dead in the water

So, I got a new playbook the day that they came out. It's been great but after attempting to download the latest OS update it locked up. It' get's about midway into the download and then just gives me an error.

I did a security wipe and am now back at the setup screens. The new wizard is attempting to download the latest 1.03.1868 release without any luck before it will move forward. I've attempted the download 15 times now and am growing very frustrated. WiFi signal is perfect. I am a long time lurker and Blackberry user. I chose the playbook because of how seamless my BBerry's have been over the last ten years but this is bumming me out rapidly.

    Any ideas?

I've tried but it won't recognize the device because it considers it still in initial setup mode.

Take it back and get an ipad. That's what you want to hear right?

Your post sounds a bit insincere and fabricated. I'll tell you why. If I bought a product and it did not work out of the box, I would have taken it back within 1 hour for an exchange.

But you, you try 15 times to fix it. Also, you claim to have had blackberries for 10 years, but this is the first time you have had a problem that has caused you to post in a forum? Not believable!

I am not calling you an Apple Fanboi, but a lot of them seem to like to come here to rave about Apple products and degrade any RIMM product.

Others may believe you, but I am not convinced at this point.

    E92Vancouver,

See Attached as "proof" that I'm having a problem. First post on the boards looking for help and I get your response.....sweet.

If anyone has any ideas that are constructive I'd really appreciate them.

Mine updates quickly. Every update take less than 10 minutes. Has never "locked" up. I have an ipad and an ipad 2. I love this OS. I find myself looking for the conveniences the Playbook provides. Yours is broken. Just return it.

Why not get on the web and use your 90 day free BB support?

    Hmmm?

His header says he owns a 9700. he might be exagerrating about the 15 times part, put some people have a hectic schedule and maybe hasn't had a chance to exchange it. Plus, if he bought it on release date its probably past the return period. Give him the benefit of the doubt.

MNFPS, my apologies then. Try this:

    1. Reboot your PB.
    2. Reboot your router.
    3. Try your update again.

I had an issue where my PB would connect to my wifi and I had a strong signal but wifi file sharing would not work because my router needed a reboot.

If this does not work, try another wifi signal at Starbucks or a friends.

If this does not work, call PB tech support. It is 24/7. Their number is 1-877-644-8405.

    PlayBook Support - Contact Support

Failing this, back it up exchange it and then do a restore to retain all of your settings, apps and browser favorites.

Let me know how it goes.

yea I say just get on the phone with BB, it seems totally not the usual user experience. If anything they can help isolate the issue "hopefully" and can advise on the necessary steps.

good suggestions, E92. I was thinking along the same lines. Definitely sounds like a communication issue between PB and his router.

Give the guy a break! I know I'm exactly the kind of nut who exhausts every possibility before I concede to a brick and take it back. I've got a monolithic Netgear router upstairs that keeps blinking at me but I'm like a Kubrickian ape trying to decifer the colors and mysteries of telenet. If only we could pry open the PB and pull the battery and hook it up to a computer. Seriously, it's worth a call at least. I wonder if there isn't some secret button combination to de-brick? It's never happened with a RIM device because in all the years and models I've never had one mortify on me yet (knock-on-wood) but a few times with dvd players and pc drives I've been lucky and dogged enough to get the right tech on the phone who knows an "undocumented" reset sequence that restored.

The thing is I interact on many other user based forums each and every day. I also log onto crackberry everyday and have found it a useful place for information as a long time BBerry user.

I'm having a problem with a new device, it's late here where I am, and seem to have exhausted my efforts using google, BB support, and jacking around with my home network. I say to myself, hey...head to crackberry and do a search. I find nothing yet again, so I decide to try my first post hoping to find some answers.

I'm met with comments about being a bogus post and that I'm exaggerating my experience. To those of you who offered suggestions, thank you. E92, apology accepted.

I'm just a frustrated user who really likes the product and just wants it working properly. I'm not one who has the time or interest to just return it for a new one as I feel that it's wasteful and unfair to the manufacture when it may be something small, or potentially something I'm doing wrong on my end.

I've tried a few additional things with my network here at home with no better result. I'll bring it to my office in the morning and see if I get anything better there. I'll be sure to post the results if in fact I get it resolved in order to help future users who may encounter the same problem.

    Pretty disappointing first forum experience.

if the above solutions still dont work, you might wanna replace your product as PB having a few defect units as well. i've got defective product first time with absurd speaker, missing sound, video hang etc, after a replacement, it works just fine!

    don't bother the e92vancouver post.

one last solution you can try is turn off the PB while connected to desktop manager, after that, turn it on again and click update on desktop manager. DM will download a file named like "debrick", it took a while to finish, so be patient. if that also don't work, just ask for replacement unit

MNFPS - don't take it too personally. We get a lot of trolls in these parts. Often they start with stories like yours. Their intention is to get us to respond helpfully, whereafter they start hating on whatever RIM product they're targeting for the day. Thanks for your post and I do hope you call RIM tech support and get your PB up and running. I'm loving mine and think you'll enjoy it too.

    MNFPS,
Do try on another wifi network.
And please post an update as to wether is was solved or not.
    Would help other users.
And don't worry about the initial response. Most of us here (including me) are overly sensitive to potential iTribe trolls due to their constant needling.
It makes less rational I'm afraid.

As for me the few times I posted here were nothing but positive feedback on the pb. With that said, after returning 2 PB because of a few lit pixels the 3rd was perfect except for the rapid battery drain, droping wifi signal, stubborn power button. I have had this Pb for 7 days and time is running short on the return. I can't say the pb are all this way because the 1st one had a desent power button. At this point I have no choice to return and wait for a concrete fix for the issues my pb has. I hope there's an answer before I head out the door.

    Problem fixed!

So...brought it to my office and still had the same experience. Every time the device reset it would start the download and then cut out before completing. Again, trying to use the DM software with no luck as it gave me an error that the device needed to complete setup before it could connect to my desktop.

Fast forward an hour. I reset the router here at my office which caused the PB to drop the connection prompting me back to the WiFi setup screen. This seemed to have snapped the PB out of its funk that it was stuck in. I re-entered the network password and got reconnected. At this point I restarted the PB and it again when to the download this time successfully.

From what I can gather, resetting the network router while the PB was attempting to work on the download broke the cycle and forced the device to go into a new task. Prior I had always reset the router or tried to reestablish the connection after a failed download. Maybe it possibly caused it to register a different IP? Not sure but I've got the PB back up and running.

I would unistall Dm from my machine reboot, redownload a fresh version reinstall it and then connect the PB it should recognize it, then i would install the upgrade (which you hopefully downloaded at the same time you downloaded the new DM). I have never done any upgrades over the air, wifi or not, they are more headaches than its worth. A bit more elbow grease doing it the hard way via DM but it pays off all the time. IMHO.
