This Playbook enthusiast is having a bad day.

I went to Staples to look at web cams, on the way checking the demo Playbook.
I have already had experience here, as the General Manager is a Droidhead who quickly steers anyone looking at the playbook away to a Droid tab. I have asked him many times to upgrade the OS and he refuses to do so because it would take him 30 minutes. That was four months ago.

The Playbook was in standby - I fully expected it to be broken but to my surprise a swipe woke it up. Checked the OS - 1.0.0!! No wifi available.

I've given up on this **** and wondering if anyone knows who to email at RIM to complain about retail setups and have them looked at, as well as the manager's attitudes. I've already written to Staples, apparently they don't care.

Now to make things worse, as I was driving away - the Kim Komando show was on the air - A caller called in and said "I have a Playbook..." - Kim cut him off by laughing rudely 'HA HA HA HA sorry, go on"..

I rarely listen to this bimbo-posing-as-a-tech-expert, because she is like tech for the masses, naive people trust that she knows what she is talking about, and she will never admit otherwise. Instead when asked a tough question she gives out misinformation, throws out some BS, or refers them to a product made by one of her sponsors, and rushes on to the next call before the questioning gets any tougher or she is called on her BS. I cant tell you how many times she has been just plain wrong on her answers, does not give the best answer, or doesn't even answer the question properly or completely, leaving her callers more baffled than when they called, and stupored as she says "ok we have to move one here... next call", or conveniently a commercial break comes up.

A true radio tech expert is Leo Leporte, with his show - "the Tech guy" - he normally knows the correct answers, and if he doesn't will honestly admit it, not try to BS and try to find the information - he even has a chatroom going during his show so he can gleen the answers from someone that actually knows.

So Kim, if you happen to be surfing for yourself on google, as with your ego, you probably do often,(she calls herself "the digital goddess") I hope this comes up for you to read. Here is the truth about you and what you get for laughing at playbook!

Incidentally the caller just wanted to know how to watch NFL past games I guess on the playbook - she told him it wasn't possible. True or untrue? Regardless, how rude for her to laugh at him before he could even get the question out!

Kim, you have offended me and put me in a foul mood so here's some well deserved bad PR for you, along with a plug for Leo - a humble "tech guy" not "tech god". Not being vindictive just expressing my previously withheld opinion of this over-glorified self hyped "tech expert", before her uninformed "opinions" mislead anyone else!-

By the way, Kim, what exactly are your credentials to be a "digital goddess" - do you have a degree in engineering? Have you ever had a job in the tech industry?

Your profile on wikipedia is very sparse:

Komando was born and raised in New Jersey. According to her show's website, "Komando" is her actual last name, and is Russian-Ukrainian.[4] Her father was a businessman. Her mother was part of the team that developed UNIX.
At 16, she graduated from high school. She went on to attend Arizona State University, graduating at 20 with a degree in computer information systems. [5] While in school, she trained people to use their computers.
She is married to Barry Young, host of The Nearly Famous Barry Young Show, a local radio show in Phoenix. Their son Ian was born in 2000. Kim Komando-Young has a sister named Jackie. She was born in Watchung, New Jersey.

i had the same experince today. The Staples at Richmond Hill Canada had the pb in the middle/central store location and i saw a few customers try it but it didnt work. I told the Staples rep in which response i got 'typical' and snubbed the pb. i dont think i'll be buying anything from staples anytime soon, seems like a store wide attitude.

Does RIM have territory sales managers that call on these retailers like Staples? If so, wouldn't it be that sales persons responsibility to ensure that the demo playbook on display is running properly? If not, why?

You got me! I'm hoping someone in here has a friend of an aunt who has an uncle that works at RIM that might know who is "in charge" of this shameful buffoonery.

Oh by the way - they had a pamphlet on the blackbery display about how to decide which tablet to get (see attached).

I had to laugh about the page that said "Operating systems explained" comparing android and blackberry OS's. One difference was that Android does "true multitasking" like QNX does not? Morons. Is this pamphlet at any other staples or just something our droidhead manager put together??

^^ Man is that really on a pamphlet? RIM really needs to step up their game on the advertising front and get the proper into into the hands of consumers. So much misinformation around does not help their case at all.

Don't get me wrong, I listen to many of Leo's shows on twit.tv and like him quite a bit. He does do some of the same sort of stuff you describe though. He acts like BlackBerrys are not smart phones, he says the Playbook is terrible and sometimes he gives people the wrong, rushed answer when up against a break on the radio show.

He hasn't used a BlackBerry in probably 4 years and constantly gushes over IOS devices and Android phones. He thinks the iPhad is the greatest device after the MacBook Air and won't ever recommend a Playbook or even an Android tablet. Even when callers tell him that they do not want an Apple device, he still pushes them.

If knowing the Windows+key shortcut was required to pass a test, he would say that Windows 7 runs fine on his Mac and ignore the usefullness of those keys.

He does have some humility and does not pretend to know everything, but it seems that many of the non-tech masses do hang on his every word.

Trust me, the BB rep who goes to most of those areas to check on how business is with third party vendors could care less if you were to report bad retailing.
I've worked with one who takes care of a few state areas, including my area in the west side of the U.S.

I trust you - that's why I was trying to find a way to go above their head - the reps are horrible if even existent. Definitely not doing their job if working at all.

Maybe RIM sales reps are not compensated very well. Maybe there is no bonus structure to motivate them to increase sales. I work in sales (much different product line), without financial compensation there is no motivation for the sales person. Doesn't matter what you sell. That being said, sales isn't for everyone. Being a territory rep can be a different ball game than selling directly to the consumer. Something else to consider, I don't know how the sales people are compensated at a retail store like Staples. However, a salesman is going to gravitate to products that they can move and make money at. If its easier to sell an iPad, then by god sell an iPad. Give the customer what they want and get your comission.

Then maybe they need to change that. But probably true - In my opinion, how gratifying can it be to do your job half ***, regardless of your reward? The personal satisfaction should be the reward and if anything it might get you promoted.

If a company doesn't pay well, what kind of employees are they going to attract? Bottom of the barrel. However, I have no idea if this is the case with RIM or not. Maybe they pay too well and the salary is guaranteed and not based on sales. Then you have no incentive for the sales staff to try and increase their numbers. It could be a case of the territory reps having much too big of a territory, resulting in an almost impossible situation where the reps are simply overwhelmed.

rim has already stepped up. they are going to put two more icons of non-existent apps on their playbook website.

seriously, it's rim who has been misinforming consumers from day one.

by the way, i was reading an article on engadget a few days ago. the author was writing some negative bs about nokia. i was so deeply offended and cried all night. we have to have that ******* fired.

LaPorte is a good guy, and very knowledgeable. Unfortunately, he didn't like the PlayBook either. I'll quote his bottom line, recorded 5 days after the PlayBook launch: "Don't run out and buy it. Even if you're a BlackBerry fan, I wouldn't run out and buy it."

Here is his podcast; it's the first 5 minutes or so of his show.

So, should the sales rep penalized because rim released a half baked product that is not in demand. Maybe if they threw in a bottle of snake oil it would sell better. Seriously, when the product first hit the shelves there was a Rim rep at our local Best Buy. She was trying to help me get the bridge going so I could see it in action (if was not available until later that day). The guy at Office Max showed incredible enthusiasm and showed me how to operate the darn thing. There was initial support but it waned and boy did it sink - very rapidly. When I went back about 2 weeks later it was already a sad experience and reviews were pretty awful.

On release day and even for about a month afterwards Leporte's caution remained valid. These days with fully functional bridge-mode and a BlackBerry smartphone the BlackBerry PlayBook makes for a better user experience, but on release day, 19 April 2011, you cannot fault his assessment of the tablet given his admitted preference for Apple products. However, by far Leo Leporte fairly accesses products though his opinions are not always 100% correct; hence the term opinion instead of fact.
