Just imagine when *the* update drops....
Just imagine if RIM decides to release the Android Player, FIPS Secure Native BIS/BES E-Mail, AutoCorrect and all the other goodies we have been clamouring for in ONE big update... say... Tablet OS 2.0. And this happens with a massive onslaught of native-code Apps released on AppWorld...supplemented with many Android apps....
What then? When we have everything possible under the sun...that no other tablet can even approach, what will be say? Will we finally admit that the PlayBook is the most AWESOME tablet in the universe and finally squash the trolls?
I really, really think that something great is around the corner... I can feel it.BlackBerry Z10 (10.1.0.273) + BlackBerry Bridge (3.0.9.11) + BlackBerry PlayBook 64GB Wi-Fi (2.1.0.1526) = Awesome! - 07-21-2011, 12:34 PM #3
I cant feel it too.

I don't think Tablet OS 2.0 will be released before QNX phones come out. I think they will probably try to keep the two OSes similar. I truly hope that they don't keep the same UI for 2.0 though. I want some home pages, where I can put widgets
, that is the main advantage I see Honeycomb having over Playbook. Anyways, sorry to rain on your parade

We would love it.
Nothing in rim's recent OS update record indicates they have the desire or the capacity for releasing an OS update with that much innovation.
Each major addition will be stand alone in an OS update unto itself, coupled with minor bug fixes and so forth.
You can bet the farm on that.

I think I am going to side with the OP...something huge is on the way...the PB as it stands to this date, is still far from being complete. I'm a firm believer that it is about to amaze many, and take off like a bat out of H.E. Double Hockey Sticks

As much as I love the PB, all those things would only put it on par with other Tablets. Not way ahead.
Granted the OS is excellent.

I hope people know that native email will be useless unless your company installs and sets up the PAS....

Yeai wish i could believe that. Really. I wished this device was already at the point we thought it was going to be when we bought it.
You have to ask yourself... if rim was capable of rolling out huge, innovative, mind-blowing updates, why havent they yet? why have we been seeing baby steps instead of leaps and bounds?
I dont see shift foreman and bosses walking into the coding rooms and saying "lets get to work developing the OS but... dont give them too much right now. Lets just squeeze out a little here or there. And shelve any huge improvements. We dont want to make apple or motorola look bad."
I think they are either having a tougher time with qnx than they originally thought they would have, or there is no leadership in rim and thus no focus... too many competing priorities.

You know what.... I don't know why it is taking so long. Maybe there is really something behind the FIPS security think that is preventing native BIS/BES e-mail. Perhaps the security behind the implementation is so necessary to secure US and Canadian government contracts.
Sure, the iPad has native POP/IMAP mail. This is a no-brainer. Do you honestly think that RIM can't release a crappy little POP/IMAP client? This is like Mercedes and BMW releasing a POS subcompact. No, they are waiting for the release a secure BIS/BES e-mail client that will allow the friggin' FBI, CIA, NSA, MI5, MI6 and CSIS the ability to deploy 1,000,000 PBs for it's field agents....
The point is....there is more going on on the backend that will revolutionize tablet security. We will be amazed with what the PB can do when the time comes.
Until then... the rest can go back to Angry Birds and fart apps. I'm waiting for the ultimate tablet.BlackBerry Z10 (10.1.0.273) + BlackBerry Bridge (3.0.9.11) + BlackBerry PlayBook 64GB Wi-Fi (2.1.0.1526) = Awesome! - 07-21-2011, 01:07 PM #12
LOL,
Apple would have been dead in the 90's, Windows Phone would have just been tossed to the side if that was case...
Even GM and Ford would be screwed...
But Apple reinvented themselves, Windows Phone is gaining traction, and GM and Ford are making popular cars that are making individuals have a second look...

I'm not saying RIM can't reinvent themselves. I'm saying the Playbook is finished. I don't care what they do to improve it.
RIMs best bet would be to save all the goodies for Playbook 2 and then try again, but they've left such a bad taste in so many people's mouths that it will be very difficult. - 07-21-2011, 01:13 PM #15
You have to remember how much testing is required for every little change to anything. Look what happened just a few days ago when something got missed in what many of you are calling an insignificant update. The magnitude of the changes we are talking about is many times that of what we've seen so far. All this stuff needs to be tested not only for how people should use it, but it also has to anticipate any goofy-a$$ thing that id1ots of ever-increasing abilities can come up with. Imagine if just one of those new features came out with a hiccup like the first of this week's bridge issues (which, by the way, did NOT bring the world to an end). You would be the first one here screaming how incompetent RIM is, and for the first time you'd actually be justified in doing so. I'd much prefer they take the time to get it absolutely right.

Who knows? Maybe even these features need to be secured. What if Autocorrect changes are stored in cache that could be accessed? Maybe the Android player poses a security hole? Bridge...same deal... Maybe it all has to be airtight. Maybe that's the only way to secure it?
