I'm returning my playbook...
I recently went on a trip, I took my new playbook, my torch and my 3g ipad2.
I had movies and tv shows converted to watch on both and ready to go.
The problem I kept finding was that I gravitated back to the ipad, for a couple of reasons, namely the battery life was better, the native email app is just simply better. The bridge app, to be blunt. Sucks. I mean yeah it works. but lets be realistic. when you go to open a pdf via the bridge, it takes some extra time to get going, eventually it goes. But if you do the same thing on the ipad, it's damn near instant. It's just hard to switch when it works so well on the ipad. I'm not really finding web browsing to be that different, they both work well.
The things i will miss is the TRUE multi tasking, I was blown away at the fact that you could record in 1080p hd, and while recording go back to view a previous video! Thats impressive. However i already have an HD video camera.
I've had issues with it crashing and there is the lack of apps.
So unfortunately i'm going to have to stick with my ipad...for now...
I just can't justify having a tablet sit around that just doesn't work as well as my other, however I think that given rim's hard core following, I think that if you give it 6 months they are going to have a real winner.
Being realistic, rim released it to soon, BUT once the apps start to arrive, and they get some solid builds out to resolve stability issues, built in 3G/4G it's going to be a game changer.
I also ended up with 2 bad pixels, and I haven't had it for a full week. that's disappointing!
I love my blackberries and I want to support this tablet in the worst way, but it's like buying a truck with a v8 but you can't run on all 8 cylinders because the software doesn't support them yet!
As Arnold said...I'll be back. - 04-25-2011, 10:54 PM #2
And you had to start a new thread because?

This is one of the reasons why people give BB users so much ****.
Two replies and you're already giving him a hard time because the device doesn't suit his needs. Why would he keep it if it doesn't work for him? The ignorance of some people is astounding.
You're starting to sound like the Apple users you seem to hate so much.Thanked by 2:damian27 (06-24-2011), iphoneboob (06-24-2011)

I guess the point i'm trying to make here is that it is a good device, and will be better than android, and the ipad, and I know there are going to be the ITG's who will just bash my post, but I just can't figure out how everyone is just thinking it's the best thing since sliced bread? it's practically slapped together software wise, the hardware is obviously solid, but I can't see how people are accomplishing anything with it.
I'm not an apply fan boy by any means, but I use the tablet for work, and you just can't get any work done with it. I know I know..this will change as the apps come, and things will improve.
it is nice to see how easy it is to move data on and off the PB, but they are such basic features and some people are ready to sacrifice their first born for one of these things. why?
This wasn't meant to be a PB bashing thread, and I should have expected the PB faboy ITG's to come out in full force like they have. - 04-25-2011, 11:06 PM

One thing that is nice to see, is how open RIM is going to be with letting users move data on and off the device. One thing that pisses me off with my ipad is how steve makes you use friggen itunes, and you have to have only supported formats. it's garbage.
The fact that the ipad will operate as a 16gb flash drive makes me realize that a 16gb PB is pointless, a 64GB will make much more sense when I buy my next one, it's just too easy to store data on it. - 04-25-2011, 11:14 PM #8
just to let everyone know my playbook does exactly what it's meant to do, no issues on my end, its an excellent device.
from downloaded videos, with out the need to rip and or recode, to seemless surfing, bridge is awsome.
just to close treads like this please provide proof of purchase and proof or return on as your ipad camera should be able to do that.
thanks, - 04-26-2011, 12:17 AM #9
In fairness to people out there who genuinely want to get some valuable feedback on the performance of the Playbook isn't it a bit disingenuous to say that opening a bridged pdf file sucks on the PB while it's instantaneous on the iPad? Is there a bridge for iPad wifi only device through a bluetooth channel? Is there even a need for it since the idevices are all sync'd through iTunes?
I don't think the bridge sucks. I have several pdf's on my Torch. One of them is a 27 page doc on Berkshire Hathaway. My files are opening instantly, and I can swiftly switch from posting in this forum to opening bridge files and then back to this forum, very quick and smooth, while bridged and tethered simultaneously to the Torch. The kit really works. I wouldn't even say the bridge browser "sucks", I've used it to browse Yahoo. It works.
But...what IS annoying about the bridge is that you can't open some media files like photos, music or videos, and you can't bridge the Blackberry keyboard on the very Blackberry device that you're tethered to. That was a bit of a surprise/letdown for me. - 04-26-2011, 09:46 AM

One other bug I found, was voicemail files. The playbook couldn't play a simple wav file. Works fine on the torch?

I have both the iPad 1 and a PlayBook and must say I gravitate to the PlayBook 9 times out of 10. I have stopped taking printouts to meetings and use the electronic formats in meetings. My kids like the apps on the iPad, but I don't use many of the apps and find the PlayBook just suites my needs better. To each their own. I am excited about the future of the PlayBook, but it already is a great device in my eyes.

I think everyone acknowledges that there are improvements that still need to be made to fill in some functionality gaps and, well, simply fulfill promises. What people do rave about is the hardware, the OS, and the potential of the device; and the differences between folks that love it and folks like you that it just isn't working for pretty much comes down to whether what it's missing is important to you or not. For me, bridge mail works just fine and I have no need for a native email client. There are a few things that I really, really would like to see added soon (ironically one of these is a decent desktop manager for the Mac!), but I'm not about to ditch the PB because of any of them.
Curiously, I just took my PB to work today for the first time, and by the end of the day I was wondering why I hadn't done so sooner. It's not going to change my work life, but it's sure going to come in handy on those days that are wall-to-wall meetings and all I'll need to do is copy docs rather than transcribe my hand-written chickenscratch. Of course I could also do that with any tablet, but the PB is my weapon of choice.
I've used my wife's iPad, and I just don't care for how it works. But that's me, and my needs are different from yours. Is the PB perfect? Not by a long shot; but, just like my crappy, outdated, underpowered BB phone, even as a work-in-progress, the PB still works better for me than the alternatives.Ed

as ive said on a few of these threads now, at least youve tried it and given it a chance instead of blindly worshipping at the church of steve
for workplace use i cant fault the pb really, vnc works a treat which is one of the main things i use, its small enough to go in a jacket pocket, long story short it does what *I* need for *my* work just fine
shame its not for you, but its all about personal preference at the end of the day

I own both iPad and Playbook, I'm using 95% Playbook, 5% iPad.
Yes, Bridge 'sucks' but it also works. Is it quick, no, can it be better YES, but it does work. Go through the forum, you'll see many threads of people yelling at RIM for Native email. Enough said.
I find the iPad slow, the use of the button now feels arcadic, the screen resolution makes me think I need glasses (fyi, i don't), and I enjoy the portable size of the PB.
Skype
Kindle
Better Bridge
Able to play MKV
Native Email
AFL App (Australian thing)
NAB App (Australian thing)
and I would be very content....until the next gadget comes along... :-) - 06-24-2011, 04:45 AM #19
To the OP, you would rather pay for two data plans rather than one? OK, some people like getting kicked in the balls too, I'll never understand why though?
Bridge isn't perfect, I'll give you that since it doesn't actually run the apps you dl, but it runs a browser, calendar, email, contacts, its pretty good and most importantly it shares the same data you are already paying for with your BB for FREE, no extra tethering charges!!! No 3G plan! Thats $300 a year you will save! - 06-24-2011, 05:42 AM #20
Did you all notice this thread was started 2 months ago? The op is long gone by now.
