| | I Need Speed
hi guys.
i have reason to believe that my wifi connection sucks. i have a belkin play n600, 300n dual band router. maybe 4 items running wifi on it (2.4ghz) and the playbook and laptop on 5ghz.
i have downloaded the speedtest app and getting 311 kbits down and 382 kbits up.
and on speedtest.net getting 0.61 mbps down and 0.43 mbps up.
i have cleaned all browser settings.
i started to realize the poor connection when i couldnt watch a simple youtube video without buffering 3 times during a 90sec video.
anyone out there familier with this router? any settings that i could change? router or playbook?
surfing is just very very slow and want to know if its my wifi or playbook. i havent been anywhere to test another wifi.
i just did the same speedtest.net on my laptop on 5ghz and recieved a 2.42 mbps, so i find it hard to believe its my wifi system.
thx keith

I had speed issues with my old slink dir655. I've been meaning to get a new router for a while. I ended up getting a linksys e4200 and it's working great. Wifi has better speed and Internet surfing seems to be more responsive. I have a 20MB connection at home
What are your current Wifi settings? Is DHCP Dns relay turned on?

My suggestion was to find a clean wireless channel. Start from channel 1, and run the speed test. My wireless router was always using channel 11 and it wasn't good. I now have it fixed to a channel that gives me 4mbps download speed. Probably there is interference with neighboring networks that use the same channel your router is choosing. Oh, another detail, use wireless G.

thx keith | 2.4ghz is the most common used band. I'd want to say about 90% of wireless electronics use it. So there is alot of interference. As thecusman suggested, start with a clean less used channel. I use a program called "insider 2.0". Install that in your computer and run it to see Wifi broadcasts close to you.
Also check your to see if dynamic Dns (ddns). If it is then turn it off.
What the model of your router? I'lk check if there is an online emulator to look at and suggest changes if your cool with that.
Cheers

In my own situation with a brand new WiFi Access Point and Router connected to the cable modem I should be achieving maximum throughput but alas such is not the outcome and frequent buffering for websites and some streaming video playback. When I switch over to my secondary Internet connection, a WiFi Access Point and Router connected to my wireless carrier network the buffering is almost non-existent (99% perfect playback of streaming media whether audio or video). Cable has always been a pain due to shared resources within the neighbourhood. Therefore, it is possible in the OP's case that their Internet Service Provider is the bottleneck or source of the congestion and lackluster connectivity.

Cheers | hey thx, for sure i am, so since the last post i have switched the router to "g" 2.4ghz and tried playing with the channels but it was a pain ( i will try that program) so i left it on auto, and am now getting speeds from 3.5 - 4.5 mbps. but the up is still very low like 0.45 mbps.
i cant seen to find the setting your referring to, ddns.
as i said it a belkin play n600 dual band n300
thx keith

thx keith | Ddns is usually located under the DHCP section.
Btw.. Check your PM box.

thx keith | A regular residential high speed connection will have about 5mbps (about 500KB/s) of download speed and 500kbps (about 50KB/s) of upload speed so your numbers seem to be within range. This is when running speedtest. If you want to check your wifi speed try transferring some files in your wi-lan. You have to take into account that the PlayBook caps at 2MB/s with its current implementation. Cheers!

I think that you need a new router. I have a Virginmedia super hub on a 50Mb tariff, I've tested my laptop and playbook on speedtest.net. The results are normally just over 50Mb for the laptop and around 27 to 31Mb with the pb, the router is set at 50Ghz.
As for using g band only, I pay for 50Mb n so that's what I expect to receive.

I'm getting about 27mb/s down and about 4mb/s up through a dlink powerline wifi unit. My router is a netgear unit wndr-3700.

Cheers! | im not sure exactly but kind of agree with this. i think i have heard this before. is 25/50 mbps even real?
i know my router is not a real expensive one but not the cheepest either. and claims to be dual band 300n, but when i test G and N the results are hugely different. i just did speed test app and got 5.8 mbps. (g) 3.5 (n - 5ghz) .

keith | Yes. 50 Mbps is very real. There are service providers already providing 100 Mbps download speeds.
I have 50 Mbps service but only get that speed when connected via ethernet cable to my modem or router. The wireless connection is my choke point and our laptops peak out at around 26 Mbps. My PB averages about half that but will max out in the low 20's.

Try using speedtest.net just to see if we're on the same playing field. My 50Mb fibre optic cable broadband is to be doubled in March/April for free. Virginmedia in the UK currently have speeds upto 120Mb. British Telecom are testing 300Mb cable in a (very) places.
Ps my speed tests as posted previously were over wi-fi.

This was earlier today and is a little slower than normal but my wife was on her laptop and my kids were streaming a movie from Vudu when I ran the test on my PB.
