for radio-version it would have been easier to have email/pim etc since you would have to go to carriers to provide data, and your device already have an active pin...so it's a straightforward; think of it as a blackberry phone without voice calls.
but rim went to wifi version first, and then get lost with how to provide email/pim service without carrier involvement (relying on wifi)...if it's free then it's negating rim's strength in mobile (phone) email/pim service (BIS/BES).
so rim get hung up in confusion since the device got no detail planning on how it will work in the first place...so they will (and did encounter) problems after another, delayed updated, patched repairs and so forth. its a good example of product planning goes bad.
