Default HOWTO - tethering to Android phone

It took a while to find a way to tether my PlayBook to my Android phone (a Sony-Ericsson Xperia X10 mini running the latest stock 2.1 system).

I first tried to pair the phone with Bluetooth but Internet connection from the PB did not work as Android lacks the necessary Bluetooth profiles.

I then tried a couple of Android apps like barnacle offering WiFi tethering. Trouble is this only works in ad-hoc mode (apart from very few handsets supporting infrastructure mode) which the PB apparently does not support.

I was about to give up when I came across an Android app that implements the Bluetooth DUN profile, does not need specific kernel features, supports Android 2.1 and does not need rooting: BlueDUN. It is unfortunately not free but there is a free trial version available.

Apart from its price, BlueDUN may have a significant impact on phone battery life but that's the only option that worked for me. I'd be happy to hear about other options though.

I haven't that option since I'm still with the stock 2.1 system but I thought it would be ad-hoc mode and would not work with the PlayBook... Anyway I only paid a couple of Euros and my time fiddling with a mod is wel worth that amount

Have you considered rooting? If you root and flash a gingerbread ROM you should be able to use mobile hotspot after that.

Search the PlayStore for FoxFi. It's the only consistent way I've been able to tether, and it's worked every time.

Yeah, it is competely phone dependent.

On my Galaxy S1 I can bluetooth tether or wifi hotspot it no problem. Usually do bluetooth for battery efficency though.

For me, bluetooth tethering is as simple as setting the phone on bluetooth discover mode and then using the Playbook to pair with it. Then select the S1 in the "Internet tethering" option in the playbook's menu to connect to the internet.

FoxFi works so seamlessly for me too.. To think it is free is just unbelievable.

Have you checked the forum specifically for your phone over a XDA Developers?

When connecting via bluetooth dun, What do you do when the "Internet tethering" menu asks you to choose a service profile to connect to the internet? No matter what profile I select, the playbook fails to obtain an IP address. My phone is the HTC Rezound.

I can't get the Playbook to tether with an HTC Incredible with BlueDun or with FoxFi.

It gets all the way through, pairs fine... but on the last stage after you pick your provider it won't work. "Failed to Start Internet Tethering".

No need to select anything on the PB for tethering. Just turn on WiFi Hotspot on Foxfi and then look for the SSID you created in FoxFi on the PB and connect to it just like you would with any other access point. It works perfectly for me every time.

Foxfi worked great as a wifi hot spot from my gnote. I rarely have a need for it, but it's nice to have it available

Ahh thanks. Damn. HTC has a "hotspot lock" according to FoxFi thats why I can't do it that way. Damn.

Thanks for the lead to BlueDUN. I got it to work on my Droid Charge and with 4G I've got a great connection to the Internet.

Foxfi needs android 2.2 and over so it won't work for the OP, it's the app i use on my samsung with 2.3 and it works great.
