Based on previous experience I would be very surprised if the Base Manufacturing Cost exceeds $100. No moving parts, entire manufacturing process can be done by a robot. The cost of the OS will add some to the BMC. Other cost such as marketing, support, shipping, etc. will add to that number but are somewhat controllable.
The worth is what a user is willing to pay. The target ROI (return on investment) would be set at 4 to 5 times the BMC. There you have $500.

    Just a guess.

No wonder Apple makes so much money on their iPads, their ROI must be atleast 25 -50 times their BMC.

Fairly certain you can put a price on something you pay for.

Really depends on how RIM realizes the PB's potential. The hardware and workmanship can stand up against anything in the market today, before the flood of quad core tegra tabs which is coming. On potential (hardware) it should be easily worth it in the 350-400 range.

As it is today, realistically the sales price is what it's worth. The archos g9 80 ($270) is cheaper in every respect except the CPU chip. But if I have to be honest, I have to say that it's much more functional out of the box than the PB and just as portable. The PB is a better buy for me than the Fire solely because of the Amazon plantation. And we all know that the Fire is selling at a loss.

For the PB to be viable (ie selling at a profit), Rim really has to hit OS2 out of the park.

Which is sad because neither of those devices are really all that special. I work at Best Buy Mobile, and I truly believe that the BlackBerry Playbook is the overall best tablet on the market. The Playbook just lacks support (on all fronts).

    Agree it is sad.

The Playbook is like a well machined sniper rifle without bullets getting slaughtered by the cheap and nasty pistols.

$250 is what I paid and I think that's about right.

I think $300-$400 is a fair price for a 16gb playbook. I think it would be in a much better market position if it had debuted at such a price point.
