HELP...with playbook backup file please!!!

Hi!
Been fighting with this and really hope someone who knows way more than me can help!!!

Returned from vacation and hooked up my playbook which asked for a backup ...I did ...then message "desktop manager can't communicate with playbook and need to upgrade" so I did ... and promptly lost everything including vacation pix & videos from the playbook!!!

HOWEVER -playbook and laptop still not communicating and I've uninstalled and reinstalled desktop manager ...I've updated the playbook 3x ...still not communicating ...not even the "z" drive anywhere on the laptop!!!

I've tested and been able to sync and transfer pictures from my old netbook to the playbook without a problem.

NOTE - Recently I had a nasty trojan virus on my laptop that locked my computer unless i paid a fee which I cleaned off (for free with malwarebytes) but the laptop is still acting a bit weird ...for example - when i try to open some apps/games on facebook it used to partially load the game ...now the game page loads and then flashes off and reloads repeatedly ...end up having to just give up!!!

PROBLEM - entire backup file (pix and videos) is stuck in my messed up laptop and no matter how many times I try to connect playbook it won't communicate and driver "z" not anywhere on the laptop. Tried to do it with file sharing ...but I was doing it when I was frustrated and sleepy and now can't remember the combo password I picked (I know ...duh not very smart!!!)

QUESTION - Can I transfer files to a USB (and what size as backup file is about 19,000,000KB?) ...Been reading this forum like a mad woman and some have spoken of a swipe which wipes out even the apps the playbook comes with ...should I do that? Would I be able to get those apps back through appWorld?

Sorry this is long winded ...just want to explain fully what happened.
