There looks to be tons of GPS apps now for the PB... anyone have any good recommendations free or paid? Let me know why you like it too...

I second the topic.
All those are useless. You will.waste your money.
The only one I've tried was Google maps with GPS. It found me after a couple of minutes to lock on to the satellites - even correctly displayed a photo of the house. I moved off on a walk and it tracked me just fine. I don't know if it would work in a car like a dedicated device but certainly looks to be okay for hiking. Like all GPS devices I've tried it needs to be in the open, indoors even held near a window most times it struggles to find satellites.
Steer clear of the Skylabs rip-off. See this thread:

I used Google Maps just last night to guide me to a restaurant on the coast. As I was leaving my house, I paused for a few seconds to allow the PB to pick up the GPS signal, then threw it on my dash nand started driving. Later, when I was getting near where I thought the restsurant should be, I woke the PB and checked my position on the cached map I had preloaded. It still had the signal and showed my position on the map as expected. I then used it to show me where an upcoming turn was in the pitch black and generally allowed it to confirm my route and direction through some very narrow, isolated back roads. The PB never lost the signal and worked reliably the entire trip.

I'm using 6.11.1. It's the most stable version to date and seems to work reliably on the PB. Newer versions switch the default view from "Map" to "Local" and also seem to have broken the GPS lock for some users.

For a really good one to come, i expect we have to wait for bb10 to arrive on the pb.
I've tried most of the ones out there.Imo Osmand (free) gives you the best bang for your money.
OP, it highly depends on what you are looking for: online or offline, with guidance or not...
As concerns simplicity, for offline localization I'd say MapDroyd is one of the best...
Being an avid user of Google Maps on the computer and on the BlackBerry, the only GPS application I have tried on the PlayBook is the native Android version of Google Maps. The one I have is version 6.2 and because my Garmin GPS isn't available to me for the time being I would like something on my PlayBook as a backup for days like today. Google Maps 6.2 worked to pull up the route and provide navigation, but about 5 minutes into it it crashed on me and wouldn't proceed. Had to rely on my BlackBerry for a bit until the app on the PlayBook started working again. Amazingly that was the only crash and was able to guide me the rest of the way and back. I guess what I'm looking for is a full GPS replacement that gives the option for offline plus guidance. It was difficult holding up the PlayBook and driving...
I have a thing for maps, not really...but I do need them everyday for work...
Here is my scenario...Three apps always open...Repligo...spreadsheet and some sort of nav...
I used google maps...IMHO, is your best option free and great nav, but with me switching between repligo and google maps would stop nav because both are andriod apps.
Then I have magellan compass with google maps and the one without Gmaps...4 days ago one with google maps stopped working, went to their website seems they have built just one app with all the maps, seems promising but would wait till update gets on to app world, its been about two weeks and its frustrating, on both RIM's part and Magellan's part...
Out of town i use osmand..because of roaming...which really is a sweet app with so much detail like lanes and speed limits and stuff, but really lacks updated map info...if there was an easy way to upload gpx tracks I would have contributed myself too...
So the best option for you is great google maps bar app, as they said 4.11.1 or so
Second best for extnesive use magallen, for 4.99, but stay away untill 4.0..
Third...osmond if you are outside and are okay with using nav app with a little vigilance...
I'll second Osmand as the best app. Besides being free and in app world, it is the only app that I'm aware of that allows for offline route calculation and will recalculate a route if for some reason you stray off course during navigation.
Having a lifelong interest in Astronomy, I have "Whats up" @0.99 .What a bargain. Once the PlayBook has been exposed to the sky for 20 minutes it will show you the night time sky in whatever area you live. Fantactic App. Also the camera has a bullseye that when tapped attaches geolocation info to your pictures.
Do you have a link to the 6.11.1 bar file somewhere? I have Google_Maps_6.3.0.bar
Osmand eh? I'll have to check it out... thanks!
While WhatsUp isn't a nav app (well, unless you're Magellan) and may not be the type of GPS app the OP had in mind, I second Scotter75's recommendation. WhatsUp is a beautiful, fun app, well worth the low cost. I've found it hooks on to the GPS signal faster than some of the other apps too. Like Scotter75, I've loved astronomy since I was a kid and can easily spend hours outside with my PB and WhatsUp.Having a lifelong interest in Astronomy, I have "Whats up" @0.99 .What a bargain.
