Your milage will vary as they say, In North America I usually just take the Playbook and Laptop out as they are usually right next to each other in my bag anyway and leave behind P&S camera, ipod, blackberry etc.. I have found that in Europe, and particularly in Frankfurt they expect all electronics including the "small stuff" to come out of bags and be placed in bins.
The last time I connected in Frankfurt there were two idiots in the security line ahead of me with huge, obviously oversized and overweight carry-on bags. The screener, very clearly instructed them to take ALL electronics out of the bag and place each item in a separate bin. So the first guy takes out a laptop and hands over the bag and the guy looks in it, sees an iPad and hands it back and tells him to take ALL of his electronics out and rattles off a list of the kinds of things he's talking about: "ipod, ipads, tablets, e-readers, cameras, game-boys, GPS etc.) so the guy takes out one or two items and again the bag is examined and there's still electronics in there, so around we go again, it took maybe 4 rounds of this dance before they got to talking about all the crap in his pockets he needed to remove before passing through the metal detector.
So then his buddy, who has witnessed this entire process goes through the same thing, in the same way, he had 4 ipads, a laptop, two cameras, some sort of portable game and a RC helicopter with it's controller and for each one of these items he had to be asked individually to take it out of his bag and put it in a bin. - 05-25-2012, 12:39 PM #27
New York Kennedy International Airport, Tokyo Narita International Airport, and Manila Philippines Ninoy Aquino International Airport - all in March. Playbook stayed in carry-on backpack. I asked some of them specifically if they wanted me to remove it, they said no. However, I had all electronics, including my Playbook, packed in such a way for swift and easy removal just in case. All smaller electronics were packaged together in a see-through plastic bag that I could pull out easily - just like my carry-on sized liquids.

PlayBook and UK Airport Security
When I first got my PlayBook (summer 2011), UK Airport Security would always get me to power it on (Manchester, London Stanstead, Heathrow, & Gatwick)
Nowadays, they just ask me to unfold the flap on the case (a Navtech 'stand-up' case) and then wave me through
Not sure why they have changed their procedures - assume it is because the 'explosives sniffing' apparatus is more effective nowadays
(UK airports are still on a high status for security alerts)BigAl_BB9900

When necessary I take the Letter of Authorization from my pocket. Nobody argues with a letter signed by JAG.

Just got back from Europe - didn't wait to be asked and put 2 PB's and phones in tray - no problems. On 2 occasions though, I was put in that transparent cylindrical tube to be scanned holding my comb above my head lol!
9000 > 9800 and now BB Z10 and 32GB PlayBook glued to my person!
