Thank you elchavodellethbridge. Yours is the first and only solution that worked perfectly for me.
(The problem with the other suggestions is that gmail kept going back to a view that didn't include the "basicHTML" option. I tried getting into gmail every way I knew and it *always* went to the broken view, and that view (on this PB) did *not* include the basic button in the left column.)
