I don't think the Playbook will ever be a major player without having the major apps the consumer expects to have on a tablet. Not having Skype on the Playbook has been a major issue for me, so much so that if they don't get it in a couple of months I will be forced to move to Android.

The other option is to try to redefine what a tablet is used for. And they aren't going to have much success with that. There are some basic functions people want from a tablet, it's very clear that Netflix and Skype are 2 of those functions.
To be clear, I don't have a need for Netflix or Skype personally. But to argue that the PB is somehow better off without them is ridiculous. If you want the device to do well, you should want these apps available for it even if you don't use them. - 05-05-2012, 09:41 PM #78

See, the funny thing is, everyone already uses Skype, Google Talk, ooVoo. And everyone can already use them cross platform, with videochat. Except for of course the PlayBook.
So please explain how exactly pretty much every single user would want to switch to a BB cross platform messenger/video chat instead? I wouldn't leave Skype, I talk to my family overseas, friends, relatives, business related calls, pretty much everything.
And no, it's not unreliable and bloated. I can't remember the last time I had a dropped phone call through Skype. - 05-06-2012, 02:50 AM #81
You with the PB. 15 of your friends with iOS and Android. Each of those with 1 friend on a PB and each of those with 15 friends on iOS and Android. See the problem?
It's easier to just get Skype. It works on the majority of tablets and smartphones out there with front facing cam videocalling. Except for BB devices of course. You can't make the majority switch to something guaranteed to not even be close to the quality of Skype.
I can videochat on my phone through Yahoo! Messenger. Problem is, the few people I know on there all have Skype. I can videochat through Google Talk on my phone. Problem is, the few people I know on there all have Skype.
This was something RIM should have foreseen a year and a half ago. - 05-06-2012, 08:34 AM #84

Ive never seen the big deal with Skype as the quality was always rubbish, MSN messenger video chat was always better but you couldnt conference.
