Is the a difference in speed with VZW tethering and Bridge browser?
Im going to get the Bold Touch when it comes out, so I was wondering about the speeds of VZW tethering plan vs Bridging browser speed? Is there a difference?
also what about the Tether app speed vs the paid tethering plan from vzw?

There is no difference because both depend on the signal strength of your phone. Now if you have a 4g phone you will get 4g speeds. i went to VZW Friday and the only alternative is a mobile hotspot. Still that depends on signal strength. However the mobile hotspot will allow you to open Wifi dependant apps from the Playbook. Bridged browsing and tethering DO NOT allow opening these types of apps. In the end i came away with bridged browsing because wifi is pretty much everywhere these days. Save the money stick to bridged browsing.

Yeah my wife has an Iphone as well. Let me clarify, if you connect to a hotspot (wireless) technically thats not tethering. Ive got a Storm 2, and when i tether(my storm enters modem only mode) no email, no calls, no wifi. Storm does not have a true hotspot like Iphone. If you connect to your iphone as a hotspot you should be good to go when it comes to opening wifi dependant apps.
Note: When connecting to my wifes iphone the connection was very funky. sometimes it would work most of the time it wouldn't. I never figured out why though.
If you want to go back to BB i suggest waiting til one comes out that'll act as its own hotspot. To date, i dont think there is one.Last edited by Thachoc1; 06-26-2011 at 09:13 PM.

Overall i decided that having wifi access wasnt all that important for now. The playbook GPS apps need to be refined. and as far as wifi apps, there are none that i cant access via bridged browsing. i.e. Facebook, youtube, and such. Bridged browsing isnt bad as far as speed only because i live in a strong 3g area. The mobile hotspot is $50 with a mail in rebate, but monthly its $50 for 3Gb i think. Why bother when i can roll up to a Starbucks or McDonalds and mooch for a few minutes if i really need to. Besides that Ive always got my trusty Storm by my side.

there have been rest does using bridged browsing and tethered (modem modem) and there is a speed differences, sometimes close to half the speed using bridge. the reason being that bridge browser goes thru bes/bis. for normal browsing, u might not notice that much of a difference though

If you're tethering via bluetooth you won't be able to get over ~3mbps anyways since the PB uses BT 2.1. You wouldn't even get full speed using BT on ATT 3G let alone any 4G phone. If you get a BB just you can always use PDnet and turn it into a WiFi hotspot.

there is no way to enable mobile hotspot on any bb right now....if u know how, please share. pdanet allows for usb and bluetooth tethering on pc and macs, not playbooks
anyway, the point of the thread is, is there a difference between bridge and tether speeds, and yes there is
as been mentioned however, bridge might be ideal for cdma users, since calls and sms wont interrupt service, as it does frequently in bt dun -

Please show me where the speed difference has been proven. How is it not that bridged browsing and/or tethering does not depend on your phones signal strength? I understand browsing attributes can be adjusted through BES. However i don't recall any of those changes regarding speed of connection. BES admin talking here. I'm all for doing my research dont get me wrong, but logic says if you don't have a signal you're not connecting to squat! If = Then.

try this....tether then go to speedtest.net and run a test
then using the bridge browser, do the same thing
i'll look for the thread in the mean time

check post 38 (mine) and 44. major difference in bridge and tether
if ur getting same speed thru both, then damn, ur one lucky SOB

Bluetooth will support up to 2.1Mbit/sec maximum. WiFi will support 54 - 150Mbit/sec (depending on the network).
3G speeds vary from carrier to carrier. However you'll never get better than 2.1Mbit/sec if you're using Bridge since it's Bluetooth. WiFi tethering you're only limited to the speed of your 3G connection since WiFi supports much faster speeds than 3G ever would.
Worth noting is that 3G and Bluetooth have demonstrated through common usage benchmarks that they average the same in data speeds. If for any reason your Bluetooth isn't achieving maximum data rates, you will notice slower speeds.
4G speeds are (conservative estimate) around 30Mbits/sec. Using the BlackBerry Bridge would still limit you to 2.1Mbit/sec. WiFi tethering is definitely the the faster option as it won't effectively throttle your phone's data speed. If you have a 4G device (which BlackBerry does not yet have so you probably wouldn't have bridge anyway), and you want the faster speed on your WiFi Playbook, you'll have to Wifi tether.Last edited by rmjones101; 06-27-2011 at 01:49 AM.

Just goes to show that its got to be signal strength dependant. While tethered my results were slower than when i was bridged. Im just sayin! Yes str8 wifi is the fastest, but whether you're bridged or internet tethered your speeds will depend on your signal strength. Even connecting to your phone enabled (network dependant) hotspot wont matter.

wait a second....ur isp is showing up as comcast at the left hand bottom corner. i think ur bb is connected to ur homes wifi network

disable wifi on both pb and ur bb and try the test again
your isp should read vzw while tethering, and research in motion while bridging without wifi enabled
edit: did a retest again using bridge and tether, note the isp designated at the bottom left hand cornerLast edited by uci2ci; 06-27-2011 at 01:02 PM.

Bridged browser results with Wifi disabled. Not full signal strength but still not much of a difference.

one thing that worries me after seeing ur results with the bridge using wifi.....its incredibly slow taking into consideration its wifi. it makes me think the bis/bridge is such a big bottleneck in speed that we will be seeing similar results with 4g phones, maybe even thru a wifi hotspot enabled bb
ima try this at home, i dont have wifi here.....but im worried and hope to not be disappointed
