This isn't RIM inventory, it's Futureshop. Likely clearing out remaining stock. I'm surprised they have any left after the recent fire sales.

I'm sitting on the Future Shop checkout page on another tab. Tempted to get one as a Christmas present - at this price it really is a good buy.

What's stopping me is the time I might have to spend later on for technical support. Got burned on this before. What to do, what to do?

During the fire sales most places were out of stock, yet they all have stock again. This is true for Futureshop, The Source , Best Buy and Walmart.

Futureshop and best buy often pull this stunt. They don't want to price match the competition, so the stock "vanishes" for the duration of the sale.

I wasn't sure either so I ordered one knowing I can return for a full refund if needed.

From 2011 referring to the then deeply discounted price of $199:
"The most recent estimates that people toss around come from a study that shows a $205 BOM cost. Figure in some conversion cost (turning parts into finished goods) and you probably have something like a $30 loss per Playbook (Im ignoring 32 and 64 GB models as a point in simplicity)."

Selling at $99 / $129 etc they are definitely paying people to buy them already. Retailers might want a dollar or two as well.

They've already written off the existing inventory, so selling at a loss is not an issue financially for RIM. If it's a new production run the cost of goods will have gone down a lot since the launch, so they may be breaking even at $130-150. No one knows until the next earnings comes out, if they announce another writedown then it's a loss, otherwise it's just increasing the market for BB10 apps and developers.

I meant my time giving tech support to the person I'm gifting the PB too. To a non technical person, it takes a lot of time and research before they can make good use of the PB, even for the basics.

When I see the mini keyboard hooked it up, it always reminds me of a 1990's powerbook! :-) Makes me nostalgic even though I never owned one!
