BlackBerry PlayBook hits FCC in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB flavors
No surprises here, just the straight-up news that RIM's BlackBerry PlayBook is one small step closer to retail: it's gotten FCC clearance. Well, at least the WiFi-only version has -- no sign of the WiMAX-capable version for Sprint yet -- but RIM's actually sneaked all three capacities of the device through on one filing (16GB, 32GB, and 64GB). There's still quite a bit of material protected under the company's confidentiality request with the feds, so we can't see internal or external pictures or the all-important user's manual... yet. But that label document is certainly cute in blue, isn't it?
In the RF Test Report DTS (end of page 9 of the PDF) the battery rating is 5400mAh, not 5300 like they said before?
Also, in the Confidentiality Request it says
Pursuant to DA 04-1705 of the commission’s public notice, we request short-term confidential treatment for the following information until 2011/3/31 in order to ensure sensitive business information remains confidential until the actual marketing of the device:
External Photos
Test Setup Photos
User’s Manual
Internal Photos
Further confirmation no release until the very end of March/Early April
i thought it went the FCC a while ago since we were seeing the FCC labels stamped on them. I guess that was just part of the rendering and not the actually stamp

Yeah i think so too, i wish they hadn't send that confidentiality letter hahaha
EDIT, well maybe i do because of the 2011/3/31 date they gave to hold the info till... hmmmm
if anyone remembers for the torch FCC announcement came out a day before release announcement. tomorrow is SXSW it is possible that it will be announced tomorrow.

i remember that! well with the document giving a 2011/3/31 withhold on confidential info, we know when it's not coming out haha. can't wait for tomorrow
If they announce it tomorrow, I would die of surprise. Cuz its not like them to "crash a party" - but it would be great, means theyre finally growing a pair....lmao
Doesn't the iPad have something like a 6750 mah battery? I've seen sites claiming 7000, but 6750 seems to be the most common number. Of course, Apple doesnt say. Maybe 5400 isn't all that big afterall?
In terms of watts, Apple says the iPad has a 25 watt battery, but the PB has 19.98 watts (by my math at 3.7v).
For reference, a standard 9700 has a 1500 mah battery (but with a MUCH smaller screen - which is the largest battery hog - besides the wifi radio).

Think about the size of the iPad's screen vs the PlayBook's.

yup and the phone was released 9 days after so hopefully it'll b sooner than later. Def a good way to stir up some excitement again I know a lot of people (inc myself) were starting to feel a bit let down but this could be great news for us.

I dunno, why would they block that info on the FCC until 3/31/2011 if it was going to come out earlier than that?

this is true as well, unless they want to protect the info from any upcoming tablet releases? tho i don't really think there are any upcoming besides the ipad. But you are correct, could be that they are still perfecting the OS like many have suggested in the past and we are still stuck till the 10th.
It seems like everytime my excitement for this device starts to subside that something like this comes along to rekindle it and get me pumped for release lol

I think they should announce the release date as a puzzle of some sort, like a riddle haha. That would be sweet.
Interesting point on "release" vs "actually having it in your hands" - I called my local apple store to get some info on the iPad2 release tomorrow. It sounds like they are only expecting to have a few in stock initially, and are set up to have people order them online starting at 5pm tomorrow. So, it sounds like a few people might get their hands on iPad2s tomorrow, but the vast majority will be waiting for delivery early next week.
My guess on the PB, is that we have an announcement on Monday, the 14th (there is a big PB party that night at SXSW.) Internet orders will go live on 3/31 (or maybe before then - who knows), but in-store sales will follow on 4/10. Just educated speculation.
