So I was thinking of getting a bb.

I am in Toronto Ontario Canada.

Any suggestions for bb model, service provider/plan?

It's actually for a family member, so I probably won't be using too much data, but I figure if I can pair/bridge/tether...why not.

Keep in mind Ive never had a cell before.

If you don't care about the touchscreen or screen res, you can get the new curves for cheaper.

9930 for sure. Don't buy a "cheap" one, go for the flagship model.
You are going to pay a lot more for the data and service than for the phone.

Depends on how much you'll use it for.

If you're going to do a LOT of bridge and tethering, I'd recommend the Device with the best battery life for talk time (closest thing to using a bit of data)

    Bold 9900: 6.3 hours
    Bold 9930: 6.6 hours

The Monaco's are also pretty good too, but I think there's a typo.
9860: Up to 4.7 hours (GSM), up to 6.8 hours (UMTS)
9850: Up to 6.8 hours (CDMA), up to 6.1 hours (UMTS)

If it's correct, then both models have the best life on their respective 3G+ networks.
If it's not, then expect the 9860 to have a sightly lower battery life on UMTS.

of course, if you won't be doing too much tethering (or tethering while plugged into a wall), then just get what feels best to you.

No. This one. Blackberry Curve 9360

It's not available yet for Wind though.
However, 'iIf you're partial to WIND (Or Mobilicity) I'd recommend you wait a bit, as the current devices are not compatible with WIND/Mobility's network. The Bold 9900 is expected later this year, though.

Yes, but with OS5 and up only
Last night I tried to bridge with my old Curve 8330 (now it's my father's) and it works OK. Low memory but it still works.

I switched over to my 8220 yesterday just for fun & found that bridge doesn't work with 4.6 so any blackberry OS 5 or above will work but if you're buying new go with OS 7 devices I guess.

Well...good question. I would only pair when out of the house, but how much would depend on my data plan.

Anyone know what an average hour of web surfing uses for data? I know its a vague question, but a guess? Should I go for a gig plan?

Go for the 6gb student plans. They should still be on until the 22

Or if you go with Wind or Mobilicity you can get the unlimited data with tethering plans, but bis is a $10 addon and tethering is another $10 addon if I recall correctly.

i would get the 99xx, might as well pair the "best" new BB with their tablet.

But if touch screen fancies you more, then go for either of the new Torches =D

Another option is to buy a cheap bold 9700/9780 on craigslist & save your cash for qnx phones possibly later this year.

They all work. Provided, as stated by previous posts, your unit's OS is 5+

it doesn't have to be the latest berries.any berry would do because the pb makes up for it.the pb is like 20 berries in 1.if you know what i mean.you could also get an iphone or android if you don't want to use the bridge feature.many people do that also.qnx berries will be equal to the pb when they come out.the berries out now are not on the same level as the qnx pb.

Well the PlayBook's bridged internet speed will depend on the BlackBerry's speed right?

I'd go with the fastest (connection-wise) device possible: the 99xx series Bold. "4G" HSPA+ isn't it?

If 3G is enough (or you rather save some $$), go for the new Curve... or get a 9780. I don't know about how the new Curve's battery is doing, but the 9780 shoud stand up 18 hours of abuse before running out of juice (and that is assuming some abusing).

I just had my old 9000 fail and had bought a 9800 just before the 9810 release so i returned it and got the 9810. Both 98xx were slightly but still noticeably faster bridging than my old Bold. By far the biggest difference was that last Bridge update, relatively speaking.

The only real issue I'm having w/ my new OS7 9810 is the lack of apps that were present for OS 5/6 phones - I still don't have mobile ESPN or BOFA apps for instance. And im getting kind of frustrated with the slow appearance of new apps.

On the other hand the user experience difference betw the 9800 and 9810 is pretty huge. The icons are in color now and the setup menu structure is much more intuitive. I think the advantage of HSPA+ and the other plusses outwiegh hhe slow appearance of apps but ask me in a month....

Nevertheless i love the PB and Torch combo and one more thing it does seem the bridge range is better with the 9810 but no data.

    Rick

One thing I should point out is that non-BB7 devices are limited to the speed of Bluetooth 2.9 while BB7 devices are less throttled by Bluetooth 2.1+ Enhanced Data Rate, and the BB7 devices may get WiFI hotspot capability in an OS update.
