I've been saving $525 to get a 16 gig Playbook. Will I need a hundred more or to get it or not?

I haven't heard the under $499 other than from bloggers.

I heard Mike say it will be price competitively with what's out there and it does more than an iPad.

$449 would be even better :-)

I agree, I think it will be $499+applicable sales tax.

Mike L is quoted as saying under $500. Speculation has ranged from $499.99 down to $399 for the 16GB with general thought of $100-$150 between models.

Mike L said under $500 back in October I think, which is where the $499 number came from. Of course, that was way before the honeycomb and win 7 tablets were announced and priced, and before the Playbooks manufacturing costs were finalized, and before the OS was finished (if it is even finished yet)....

I thought I've heard this, but I didn't know if it was squashed for sure or not. $399 would be soo perfect, I'd have enough left for cases and what not. But sadly it might be $499.

Thanks for the heads up. I agree if it's under $500 it's $499.99, $499.98 if we're lucky HAHAHA

Though I still think it's going to be more than $500.

$399 was from that debunked (and now defunct) Mobility Insider site (which also said it was a 8 gb model).

Oh yeah I hate that website, his video was lame, he actually posted on here and people were bashing him like "Come on, you have a Playbook? SHOW US!"

No no no. $299 would be soooo perfect.

    Anyone for $199? $99? $9.99?

i saved up $600 because, or course, a screen protector and case is a necessity. i think it will be $499 based on what Jimbo said

$499 is about 310 here. That would actually be amazing as i've got 600 for this. So perhaps i'll be up for a 32gb plus some accessories.

Between $399 to maybe $479. "Under X amount" in tech talk usually means a decent amount, not like the ******** car ads "For under $20,000 and you can own this new car!" and the car is $19,999.99 or some crap. Gadget world takes pricing seriously.

It'll be 500 for a 16GB one here in the UK here seriously. Potentially 600. We have to pay a stupid amount in Import Taxes so the 310 becomes a moot point. And UK companies charge a LOT more than their US counterparts. I believe a Torch is $400 in the US off contract and unlocked. 464.95 in the UK.

Don't worry. We feel it the other way around too.

Now take this with a grain of salt, but I remembered this:

RIM: 4G PlayBook Coming to Sprint in Summer 2011 [CES 2011] | Cult of Mac

    Especially the line:

At “under $500 a pop, the PlayBook 4G already has potentially “tens of thousands” of corporate customers, according to a RIM senior vice president.

If true, that would imply the 4G version (Sprint at first) would be $499. I took that to mean the wi-fi maybe $399?

This has been playing in my head over and over and it is the same conclusion I came up with. This article is throwing out $399, but than they have the wrong processor on the PB. I still think earlier rumors of it being $399 would be spot on.

Someone in another thread stated that rim is paying $400 just to have them manufactured. IF that is true, there is no way in Hades that rim will settle for such a small profit margin, especially after factoring in distribution costs and carrier markups. IF the $400 figure is accurate, no way these things will come in less than $600 without subsidies.
