I was wondering if people were having any trouble getting their hands on a discounted PB? I was cruising Future Shop and the 16gig PB is not available in any stores in the greater Toronto area, and is sold out on Bestbuy.ca. I assume it is a similar situation in North American cities? Anyone notice similar things.
Seems like a sale is what the doctor ordered to increase user base/clear out the inventory.
Not being able to find a PlayBook just might be a "good thing". If there's enough of them sold it might put pressure on various sources to make the PlayBook live up to its "POTENTIAL". This PlayBook "sale" is a very clever move looking at it from a business point of view.
TheSource.ca still has stock. Sears.ca and Bestbuy.ca are sold out. Futureshop.ca is 'temporarily sold out' but has "290+ available on backorder."
I think the 'sale' is just to generate buzz and get it into the hands of new users prior to the big update to OS 2.0. Hopefully it means OS 2.0 is coming very soon, otherwise they might just end up with a bunch of returns and more negative publicity.
It is easy to come by 16GB units in our area but I had to do some hunting on the websites to find a 64GB PlayBook. Finally found one at a Best Buy but had to travel or wait for them to send me one. I travelled.
All the Costcos' in Edmonton are "not selling them (PB) anymore". But in my opinion Costco has a tendency to buy a large amount of an item, like the PB, distribute them to their stores and sell them til they run out. If the item is popular, they will do the same thing the next year.
Sold out in all 11 bestbuy's(SF bay area) near me as of Friday, zipcode- 94303. Almost all Bestbuy's in SF area, San Diego and LA area's are sold out as well .
Best buy website says backordered for the 16 and 32.
Searching stores near my zip code it shows the 10 closest stores.
16 sold out at 8 of 10
32 sold out at 7 of 10
64 sold out at 6 of 10
I bought my 16 gig from Office Depot in 64801 which left them with only two new 16 gigs plus the display (that didn't work). Best Buy had one 64 gig and Wal-Mart and Office Max were sold out. Kinda funny to hear all the sales reps stories as to what "RIM" is doing with the PB....

I picked one up this afternoon (16gig) at the Staples near Square One (Burhamthorpe Rd W). I price matched The Source and paid 290+tax.
Hmmm. Wondering why my previous post was deleted. Not a big deal I guess. Just didn't expect it from this site. If the MODs do not want anyone to question the who, what, when, why and where concerning RIM products, then just say so. Geez.

i'm in the same area - Staples had limited stock in the SF area, i snagged one Sunday mid-day in South San Francisco (near Tanforan)...and am posting from it now
Massachusetts backordered online for 16 and 32 and out of stock in all stores. They took my order Friday before b/o but order seemed to stall. I called to check and they said it was because of the b/o adn that I'd get a message early next week when they'd get a new shipment. They haven't taken the "hold" on my card off though. Web said it couldn't cancel my order but the 800 number sent a note to the "order center".
I immediately called Staples and ordered a 32 (which now has the 200 instant discount. Laughed with the phone tech about BB lousy service as her husband works for them.
A few months ago, I saw a stack of around 30 (maybe fewer) Playbooks in the cage.
Assuming that none of these were sold earlier or retuned to the manufacturer and assuming that each store had around 30 and every one was sold out, that would mean that Best Buy sold around 30,000 Playbooks.
Staples has around 2,000 locations. My guess is that each Staples carried fewer than any Best Buy, but even if they did carry 30 each, that means that they would have sold 60,000.
There are some online sales as well.
So, my guess is that there were around 100,000 units or less in the channel in the US and that these are being burned through at a respectable rate at the current discounts.
I checked online at the best buys near my location. They all said they were out. Called one of them and they told me that every store in the houston location was out and they would not be getting anymore. Just for the heck of it I went to one and they did have atleast one in all models available; contrary to what was said online and over the phone.
