Looks like Amazon could own the mobile technology that Playbook uses. One wonders what will happen if this comes to fruition. Amazon uses the same chip set also.

    From Wikipedia:
OMAP (Open Multimedia Applications Platform) developed by Texas Instruments is a category of proprietary system on chips (SoCs) for portable and mobile multimedia applications. OMAP devices generally include a general-purpose ARM architecture processor core plus one or more specialized co-processors. Earlier OMAP variants commonly featured a variant of the Texas Instruments TMS320 series digital signal processor.

On 26 September, 2012, Texas Instruments announced that they would wind down their operations in smartphone and tablet oriented OMAP chips and instead focus on embedded platforms. The fate of OMAP therefore remains uncertain.

I'm... a little skeptical, to be honest. Yes, I can see where Amazon would be attracted to what would really become a proprietary platform (who else would buy?), but would they really want to put in the R&D dollars to keep it abreast of the competition?

One takeaway from TI's abandonment of the platform: OMAP5 wasn't as good as many of us thought it would be. What does Amazon get out of tying itself to an uncompetitive technology?

Hard what to read on this. Amazon is TI's biggest customer and this division is a money loser for TI. The technology is a little dated now so maybe they can get it cheap. Barnes & Noble Nook also uses this product.
