Is there a problem with this phone?
It seems all the hype is going to the bold, and even the older blackberries are getting more traffic on this site...6 viewers in here, over 200 for bold, 190 for the old curve.
I am in the market for a phone and am getting tired of waiting for the javelin on t-mo, was deciding between this flip and the curve.
Though it is rather alarming that this forum is dead, making me believe this BB isn't exactly earth shattering. - 11-04-2008, 03:28 PM #2
From what I've heard the flip is cool with it's os 4.6 and it's clamshell, but it's slower than my old apple e2. I mean come on, 30 seconds to take a freaking picture? seriously? if your stuck between the flip and the curve, I'd go for the curve hands down or even a previous pearl anyday... Just my 2 cents.

That's part of the problem, that's what you HEARD. It DOES NOT take 30 seconds to take a picture. It takes mine 1 second to take and 1 second to save. This phone to me is great...but that's because I love flips and I love BB's so to put them both together is a plus. My wife had a Curve and bought the 8220 and loves it also. The OS is good, it's buggy just like all new things and will be improved with later updates. Later updates will also make this phone more functional just like most flip features. The big plus for the Javelin is the 3.2mp camera, other than that I believe it will be the same phone (other than the full qwerty keyboard but then it comes down to preferance) with the same OS because it's not 3G, only the Bold is. The traffic is less in here because not many people have this phone for 2 reasons. 1.) Not everybody likes flips. 2.) This phone still hasn't, or just hit most markets so people are still getting their hands on them or still trying to get them unlocked for their service. And of course people have their own beefs with the phone. Personally, I love it. It's still light and compact like my Pearl 81xx was.

They won't even be close IMHO. main difference is the much quicker processor. the flip is still running at 312mhz which is why it struggles with 4.6 to keep up with older phones. the javelin should be able to handle 4.6 much better than the flip and more like the bold does.

Let's account for size. The Javelin is bigger so I'm pretty sure if RIM could've fit a faster processor into the 8220 I'm pretty sure they would've. And honestly I don't think that's the reason why the 8220 runs the way it does because it IS NOT slow at all. My wife says that her 8220 runs the same as her Curve on Edge and Wi-fi. The phone runs fine to despite the slight lag with my super quick texting and quick hurry up and get it done button pushing and it will get even better with later updates because this IS THE FIRST phone to run 4.6OS.

If I was into the suretype and a clamshell id get this phone. The pearl is basically the none clamshell version of this phone. It looks pretty sweet I do like the external screen. Just some users want a full keyboard like myself.

Hate double typing huh? That's all I used was multi tap on my Pearl 81xx, then they did a software update and completely messed it up made it respond weird so I had to go to sure type and I LOVE it now. Its even faster than my multi tap now.

I just got a 8220 to demo and I have to say I'm impressed...it is nice and does have some bugs but the Curve's and Pearl's had it as well when they were first introduced...it's speedy and does a good job though. The flip is nice to have for a BB...still not sure if I'm a flip guy or not

I got my 8220 flip 3 weeks ago and have not encountered all the problems that other users are reporting. The problem I have is external notification preview stops working sometimes, which is OS issue since reboot fixes this as with most of BB issues. Reminds me of windows 98 & 95. I’m confident that most of the software issues will get worked out in a few months and make this a great alternative to the basic flip phone, now I don’t have to carry a flip phone and pocket PC. What has me concerned is the number of postings on the net that sound like hardware issues that software updates can’t fix. Sure hope this phone is of quality construction. For me I think this is a great phone and would recommend it to any flip lover.

If I didn't have my Pearl 8120 on a 2 yr. contract, I'd probably get this flip version. I love flip phones because of the fact that you're much less likely to scratch the screen. One thing I hate about my Pearl is that the screen is so easy to scratch. I have to put a BSE vinyl protector on it, and don't like it because of the orange peely look of it when applied.
A flip phone when opened to talk, also reaches from your ear all the way to your mouth, which is the way it should be. With a candy bar type phone, the phone goes from your ear to your cheek, and you're talking into the air. I don't like that.

All the bad news you heard is off. I have the KickStart and love it. Compared other phone, this phone is fast, and can easily keep up with other BlackBerries. I've heard all the bad things about this phone, none of them have yet been justified.

The 8220 IS slower and laggy when compared to the 8120. I tried a curve a few days ago and it seemed faster and more responsive as well. I understand why it is laggy, but that still doesn't justify it. People are definately exaggerating how slow it is, but there is a noticeable lag when switching applications or even scrolling through the icons with the trackball. When I start typing a number to make a phone call it usually takes a couple of seconds for the first number to show up and about 50% of the time the first number doesn't register at all and it starts with the second number. That's really frustrating to me and I have no patience when it comes to things like that. I had an 8120 for a few weeks before I got the 8220 and my girlfriend has an 8120 now and side by side, the 8120 smokes it. I find that if I am calm and take my time, it works ok but if you're the impatient type you're going to be frustrated with this phone at times. See this thread for more people with the same issues.
Internet is better on the 8120 too but I haven't tried the opera browser yet on the 8220, so maybe that will change.
Overall, I still like this phone. Call quality is better than on the 8120 and it seems to hold a UMA connection better as well. It's definately easier to type on and I like that it's a bigger phone when opened up. I need something to hold on to and the 8120 felt like a small little toy. I just hope they release an OS update soon that speeds things up.Last edited by sandman5e; 11-12-2008 at 10:37 PM.

Yes, a new OS update would be nice. I guess I'm not as impatient as others, and I'm just not too worried about having super fast internet on my phone. I use my BB for e-mail and to look up small things here and there. Not too big on a web-phone, I already have a computer for that.
