Phone changes to alphabetic unexpectedly

Often when I try to direct-dial a number (not in the Address Book) half way through the phone switches to alphabetic characters. T-Mo claims they had never heard of this. T-Mo replaced my phone but the new one does the same thing. RIM refused to discuss it. Anybody?

It's happened to me a couple of times, I just figured I must have held a key down too long, or double taped for one reason or another.

If I stop and watch how I am dialing it won't do it again, so I just figure it must have been me.

The T-Mobile techie said I was probably touching the # key with my fat fingers. He pulled a phone from his drawer and tried entering the same number I had tried. Then he said, "Well I'll be darned - mine did it too." Go figure.
