Default Fixed trackball - now external speaker doesn't work!

I recently got a secondhand Pearl Flip and love it - but hadn't appreciated it was prone to crud in the trackball. It stopped registering downward motion and after doing the research I took it apart and fixed it.

However, when I overslept this morning I discovered the external speaker no longer works! I presume I've done something to the mute button, volume control or speaker connection but would prefer not to open it up again without a walk-through.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Mel.

Here's a good walk-thru set of instructions:
Blackberry Flip 8220 or 8230 Trackball Replacement | BlackBerry Repair

I seem to recall that Hubermania posted a list of links for flip teardown and rebuild. You might want to check his posts - he is truly the fearless one when it comes to the flip.

Thanks JC, it's nice to be noticed! I haven't had the dead speaker problem (knock on wood), but this is the second post I've seen about it.

When everything is reassembled properly, the keyboard should lay flat against the side rails with no bulges or anything. Welf_man, look at the link JC posted and go through steps 1-9 of the disassembly. Then make sure the circuit board is seated properly, particularly the bottom tail shown in the photo for step #10. If that end of the main board isn't seated, the press-fit contact connection to the speaker won't be made.

If that's not the problem, go on through steps 10-13 and lift the main board up just enough to make sure both ribbon cables are securely attached. Getting both of them reattached at the same time is the most maddening part of trackball replacement.

Thanks - I'll double-check that. On the bright side, the trackball still works!

Well, I know what's wrong with it - the left-hand contact strip in picture 10 is missing. It must have been loose anyway to have come out.

I had a go at a quick fix, but no joy. I'm guessing there's not much chance of getting a replacement to fit myself - but at least I can tell the repair peope exactly what needs doing!

Thanks for the help, JC and Hubermania.

You're welcome! I'm surprised that you can't get the part you need from the Blackberry Repair website.

Can't find it anywhere so far, but I'll keep looking, and will try to make an alternative.
