Thanks JC, it's nice to be noticed! I haven't had the dead speaker problem (knock on wood), but this is the second post I've seen about it.
When everything is reassembled properly, the keyboard should lay flat against the side rails with no bulges or anything. Welf_man, look at the link JC posted and go through steps 1-9 of the disassembly. Then make sure the circuit board is seated properly, particularly the bottom tail shown in the photo for step #10. If that end of the main board isn't seated, the press-fit contact connection to the speaker won't be made.
If that's not the problem, go on through steps 10-13 and lift the main board up just enough to make sure both ribbon cables are securely attached. Getting both of them reattached at the same time is the most maddening part of trackball replacement.
