Lightbulb External display "Easter Egg"

After two years owning my 8220, I finally started using the Timer function on the clock. I suppose I should have expected this, but the outer screen will display the running Timer or Stopwatch when the phone is closed.
  1. Open the Clock app
  2. Click Menu->Stopwatch or Menu->Timer
  3. Click the green Start/Stop button
  4. Flip the phone closed
  5. Observe the running stopwatch or timer on the outer screen

Unfortunately the media and convenience keys have no effect. The only way to control the stopwatch or timer is with the phone open.
