Blackberry in Water -- Strange Results..
Hello,
Dropped blackberry in bathtub while turned on and pulled it our thirty seconds later. Dried it off and shook it and plugged it in. It turned on, began 'receiving texts,' judging by the vibration, and then I turned it back off. The screen lit up but remained black, and the key pad didn't light up.
It's now four days later,
When I press the blackberry on, nothing happens. If I connect the blackberry to its the wall charger, the red LED light will come on four about 20 seconds and then turn off. It will not turn on again, and actually I've replugged it in since then and the red light didn't come on the second time. I pllug it into the computer via USB and Device Manager recognizes it and says that it's working correctly. The device will repeatedly connect and disconnect from the computer, making that 'dun dun' sound over and over.
I tried to Backup the files, but the Backup button is grayed out. I tried to reupload the OS using AppLoader but get the same result everytime, "a connection to the device could not be established."
I tried to wipe it with Jl Cmder, but get the same response every time: "unable to open port."
It also seems as though when the computer tries to connect, it isn't able to determine what the blackberry's pin is...
I have tried altering the order of removing the battery, opening DM, plugging in, inserting battery, etc, no change.
Any ideas what could be going on? - 07-04-2009, 01:07 PM

Forgot to ad, it seems like the reason the programs can't connect is because the device reboots when apploader and jl_cmder try to connect to it. I can't confirm this because neither of the screens seem to be turning on at this point.

Well it seems from your first post that you did not let your BB dry out nearly long enough before you tried to turn it back on. Sounds like you just "shook" it dry and tried to turn it on.
Whenever something happens like that happens, the first thing you want to do is pull the battery, sim card. Leave the battery cover off and put it near a heat source with a fan. A little space heater is perfect for this. Really the only hope of recovering your device from a certain death is to let it dry out COMPLETELY, before attempting to turn it on. I would recommend letting it dry out, by fan and some heat, for at least 2-3 days. That is just about the only way to let the inside of the device dry....it takes awhile.
Then you can replace the battery and sim card and try to turn it on. I have recovered several mobile devices by doing this.
It is tempting to try to to turn it on right away after it gets wet to see if it still works...but that is exactly what can kill it for good. Gotta let that baby FULLY dry out.
Good luck to ya, sorry to hear it happened!Act happy, feel happy, be happy, without a reason in the world. Then you can love, and do what you will ~Dan Millman - 07-04-2009, 10:07 PM #4
The thing mighten be fully dry yet. Put it in a zip lock bag full of white rice and let the sucker sit for a day. The rice sucks out the moisture. Google it for better instructions.

One can only hope they did.
Even if they manage to rescue it I doubt it will every work completely the way it should.
The insurance is getting to be about a joke tho. $90 deduct at the moment from tmobile. I'll probably cancel it in a few months . For that much Its not much of a leap to just buy another one outright IF the need arises. - 07-06-2009, 02:25 AM #7
I am just curious, did you not realize you dropped it in the tub?Dropped blackberry in bathtub while turned on and pulled it our thirty seconds later
Why did you wait "30" seconds to take it out?

lets put it this way - if she doesn't have insurance.. shes screwed.
Its like she did everything possible to make sure it wouldnt work again.
1. She had it near water. Bad idea, I don't care HOW careful you are.
2. SHE LEFT IT IN THE TUB FOR 30SECONDS?!?!?!?
Phones usually have a good tight seal on them. but water can still get inside.
3.She turned it on. That's what killed it.... end of story.
Once you turn it one while there's water inside. It short-circuits everything.
What to do if you drop your phone in water.
IMMEDIATELY remove it from the water and take the battery out THAT INSTANT. NO WAITING.
set the battery battery cover and phone (take off any clip on covers) on a towel in a safe place and dear god, AWAY FROM WATER
DON'T PUT IT NEAR A FAN OR HAIR DRYERS. This has the potential to push water in DEEPER. Which is NOT what you want.
Im not sure about using a heat source as heat can damage phones easily.
the rice thing will work. and is quite helpful. google it.
wait several days before turning it on AT ALL. Not even a PEEK until atleast 3 days has gone by.
If all that failed you, BBs usually come with great insurance (if you pay for it) which covers water damage (my mom left hers in the rain for an hour, and against my pleading SHE TURNED IT ON, but they sent her a new one free)
Honestly. IDK how you could be so careless. I'm some what glad this happened to you. Maybe you'll learn that
CELLPHONES + WATER = BAD

One more thing
HOW THE HECK IS YOUR PHONE DYING AFTER LEAVING IT IN WATER A STRANGE RESULT???
were you expecting it to grow a blackberry tree or something???
Did you think it would turn colors?
Honestly what "RESULT" were you looking for?
"these results were just so strange! I mean my blackberry dies when I put it in water! I was hoping for a cure for cancer or something, but this?! Electronics and H2O not mixing?! I've never heard of such a crazy thing!"

First aid for drowning: people vs. BlackBerry
Jeez, give jwarne a break. Talk about adding insult to injury! I can understand a noob's first reaction to a drowning.
Say you and your sister are walking on a footbridge over a river. Your sister slips off the bridge and plunges into the current. You pluck her unconscious from the chilly depths. What's your first instinct? Do you drag her into your kitchen, pull out her heart, and seal her in a gigantic airtight bag of white rice? I think not! You frantically check for a pulse, make sure she's breathing, and ask "OMG are you okay?"
Unfortunately with a BB, as Vyxnn has so ironically stated, checking to see if your BB is responsive after a drowning is precisely the wrong response. It has no external vital signs. It not breathe, listen, or speak. And far from being waterproof, it is deadly allergic to water. The correct response IS to drag it into your kitchen, pull out its heart, seal it in a bag of white rice, and wait for the resurrection on the third day.

Ok i had to post on this.....number 1...Vyxnn your posts are haliarious....if my sister fell in, id laugh at her....love it.
But going back, to compare dropping your phone in the tub to someone falling in the river is a terrible comparison. If you dropped your toaster in the tub, would you reach in a grab it? Probably not.
Unforutnatly we live in a world where people always need to be connected, and that includes during bathroom time.
Rather then the stack of magazines on the top of the toilet, they have blackberry time. One person i know keeps a charger next to the toilet. Thats the sad truth.
Accidents happen, thats what happened to the OP, it was an accident. And based on the join date and amount of posts, im sure she is a newbie with little bb experience, so cut her a bit of slack.
Its not like we've never done anything stupid with our phones....answered them in the rain.....dropped them in the snow....or left it on our lap while we drive and sent it on a 1 way trip to the street when you get out of the car.
All and all this dosent need to be a thread that keeps bashing the OP. She screwed up, and now she'll learn, just like we all do....from our mistakes. - 08-01-2009, 02:23 AM #15With love,

Heat can do as much damage as water can. If the device gets wet, immediately remove the battery and SIM card and use a paper towel to soak up what you can. Them submerge the device in a bag of dry rice for 24 hours. The rice trick has worked numerous times for people here...
The greatest trick the devil ever pulled, was convincing the world he did not exist... - 08-01-2009, 04:17 PM #20
OMG!! How dare you have an ACCIDENT!!! Everyone else posting in this thread has always prepares to avoid those... Shame on you...
Way to kick someone while they are down... and then to start eHumping on top of it? Nice way to greet a new member of CB...one of these days see me drivin' round town in my rock 'n' rolls Royce with the sun roof down
my bottle of booze no summertime blues shouting loud look at me in my rock 'n ' roll voice... - 08-01-2009, 05:31 PM #22
I see you like Aerosmith. So I can't be mean to you.
BUT if you DIDN'T like Aerosmith, here's what I would say.
Yes accidents happen, but everyone KNOWS you shouldn't have a phone near water... EVER.
A phone falling in water isn't accidental, its carelessness.
It's like those people who bake in tanning beds all the time, but are surprised when they have skin cancer. People are told thousands of times "tanning beds cause skin cancer tanning beds cause skin cancer tanning beds cause skin cancer." just like they're told, "Water kills electronics, water kills electronics, water kill electronics."
Yeah, theres a chance you won't get skin cancer while baking in a tanning bed, just like theres a chance you won't drop your phone in the water if its near it.
But why take the risk?
There's a reason a lot of cell phone insurance companies don't insure water damage.
Practically the ONLY way I can think a cell phone damaged by water can be a TRUE accident is if its in your pocket, and you spill something in your lap, but I doubt that would cause much damage. Cell phones typically have a nice tight seal on them to prevent everyday moisture from getting in.
But having a phone near an open source of water? Always a bad idea. unless you have one of these:
http://shop.crackberry.com/aquapac-h.../4A104A593.htm
If you ask me what happened is:
A: she had it stuffed in her bra to hold it, and when she bent over to check the water, it fell in.
B: it was sitting on the side of her tub, and she knocked it in unawares (which wold explain her leaving it in the water for 30 seconds)
C: shes like my friend lance, who insists on texting while in the tub.
If you don't want your phone water damaged, don't take it near water.
And I wasn't eHumping him, I was just being silly.
But from the cute little thing you did with your PIN, I'm assuming you like Aerosmith, which means you have good taste in music, so I can't say any of that to you.
and holy cow SD has 7k posts. With love,

Wow a few of you make it like its the end of the world if you bring it near water.. Who cares?? I sure don't.. My storm is with me no mater what the weather is like.. I just came back from a 130 mile ATV ride up in the mountains.. That BB was strapped to the side of me but protected somewhat from mud and a few elements.. I still needed to be in touch with my office. Yes I do take mine to the bathroom with me, heck if i miss a call, than my competitor will get the money and you think I want that?? If my phone gets damaged, than I will claim it.. Otherwise, no fear..
