Is there any way to send longer SMS messages on the 8130? Is doesn't let me go over the standard word limit

Verizon does have that set limit of 160. That's more of a network based limitation (although somehow the SMS app knows this). Afterall, it is SMS. (Of course everyone has a different interpretation of "short.")

Not a word limit, actually a character limit... 160 character industry standard max for SMS. The 8130 does not support EMS so there is no way to exceed 160 characters.

Not set by Verizon, 160 characters is the standard SMS max across all carriers.
