Pearl and random charges?

I recently bought an unlocked BB PEarl 8120 for use with my German O2 prepaid sim card. I have never had a smartphone before nor any experience with a blackberry.

I have only used the phone for basic texting and receiving calls. On Friday I received a message that I was low on minutes, thought fine but thought it was a little strange and put 15 euro on the phone. I made/received about 6 texts over the weekend. I didnt leave the country or 'roam' make any other calls or surf the internet. I received a text at 2pm today that I had less than 4 euro prepaid amt left, and when I checked my balance it was 1.26 euro (I had made no calls during this time). Obviously something is racking up charges/draining my account but what?

I am now a bit afraid to use the phone (put the sim back in the old media market cheapie phone), and the unlocked blackberry I was going to buy my gf (she has a contract phone that just died) have put on hold so that she doesnt get hit with an outrageous bill.

Am I missing something here? Is there some feature that is on all the time racking up charges via o2?

I really don't know anything about o2. But a bb in general is constantly using data. Here in the states, a smartphone user is required to have a smartphone plan for that reason. Also to use some of the basic bb features you need to have a bb specific plan.

I'm sorry that I can only speak of US requirements.
