I called technical support again and was told that it's my phone that doesn't support it, but somehow the BB Tour does? Here's the thing. I have this app called Beyond160. It allows me to send sms greater than 160 characters because on CDMA devices it doesn't let SMS messages carry on beyond 160. Anyways, when I type an SMS in the Beyond 160 app in Arabic it comes up fine, but when i send it and it shows up in the messaging up it still shows as question marks.

Can you try writing a memo in Arabic? If Beyond160 shows the characters correctly, but the actual SMS client not, I believe there is some conflicting file on the CDMA 8130 that is not present on the GSM 8110/8120 models. In my theory at least... or the OS for the CDMA 8130 simply does not load the net_rim_font_semitic module. Can be anything. If you can write succesfully in Arabic using MemoPad however, try forwarding the memo as an SMS. Even if with Beyond160/MemoPad you can see the characters correctly, but when sending and having the SMS in queue not, does the receiving device read the text correctly anyway?
I made a small experiment by writing in Arabic, sending an SMS to my sister's Nokia and have the Nokia forward the message back to my BlackBerry. On her Nokia there is no Arabic support so the SMS showed up as a collection of "black boxes". When forwarding back to the BlackBerry though, all Arabic characters were intact and the message showed up correctly. - 09-25-2009, 12:17 AM #29
I tried several things:
1. I can write a memo in arabic but i don't have the options of forwarding it as an SMS.
2. Receiving device does not see text correctly if i send it through beyond160.
3. I tried flashing a ROM of another carrier, but it still displays all '?' on the SMS field when I type Arabic.
4. My only option is to use Google Voice SMS via the google voice app for BB and send sms like that. I did, however notice that if I were to send an Arabic sms via google voice app to myself it never reaches my phones, but as soon as i send an english one it arrives almost instantly. Google voice does not yet support international SMS so for the time being I'm stuck to only sending SMS in English transliteration of Arabic. ehh. hana3mel ehhh?
thx for your help anyways.

You can see that it is impossible to enable UMTS for the 8130 (so cannot send arabic sms....will have to stick to mms/email/web instead)
I checked using QPST Service Programming. Maybe somebody else will have better luck and show me how it's done... - 10-22-2009, 07:44 PM #34
Thanks a lot for your work. I installed it and its working perfectly. The only thing is I'm trying to input Farsi and we have 4 extra letters! Do you know how I can make the needed mods in keyboard input? (I can read alright, just can't write since there's no keys to input them)

Hello Gawaher,
You must update your BlackBerry to 4.5 firmware. - 12-19-2009, 03:43 AM

Unfortunately, you need to memorize the keys. I do not have the Pearl anymore, but neither did I have an Arabic keyboard for it.
Can you quickly uninstall Arabic Language Support and reinstall with the new version I just uploaded? Check for the first page of this thread for instructions. Thank you.

I downloaded your zip file on my 8220 and it works perfectly!
The only thing I found that didn't work is that there seems to be no ya. Am I perhaps missing it?
Thanks for the great application and download! I spent days looking for a way to input Arabic on my phone! - 12-24-2009, 03:38 PM #44
I will install the new update you have posted and try sms. However, I am almost certain that the limitation comes with the CDMA network, as you can see I previously posted the inability of 8130 to enable UMTS. I will report back soon
Edit: Installed new version after removing old one. just wanted to confirm, CDMA limitation is not due to the release, but the inability to use UMTS with sms messaging.Last edited by arjang; 12-24-2009 at 06:05 PM.

@m_majed:

1. Press the green dialing button.
2. Press the BlackBerry button.
3. Choose Options.
4. Choose Smart Dialing.
5. Set Country Code to Jordan* (that is +962 if I remember correctly).
6. Press the back button, if it asks to save changes, choose Save.
7. Try dialing again and see if it works.
* Assuming you live there / frequently call numbers in Jordan. - 01-11-2010, 07:18 AM #49
