to my horror i discovered the mute button doesn't mute calls (in a cinema).

when i hit mute i get "entering standby mode..."

is standby somehow not mute, and if so, why the **** do they call it a mute key?

The mute/standby button mutes the microphone during calls. I don't think it is supposed to mute the ringer. You can silence the ringer by hitting the end call button (although I don't think you can answer the call after doing this)
