Yea, I kinda gathered that. But why will my BB not open them?
I take that back, the file will not even go through. When I receive an email with that type of attachment there is NO little paperclip on the envelope in the email notifier thingy.
I don't think there's support for Office 2007 yet. We'll have to wait until RIM rolls out Docs to Go. And even then, I think it's going to be BES only for a while.
The BIS servers will not open any file type it does not know, including .docx. The new Documents to Go does have support for Office 2007 formats.
It's actually a good file format in many respects. It usually results in a smaller file than the old doc format, and it contains all the text and images as separate files so it's quite transparent. If you get one, change the file extension from docx to zip and you can see what's inside.
