yes they are on home screen. They are in same area that a new sms or email icon would be. I am using the At&t theme. I changed themes to see if it did the same thing and it did.

I am also having the same problem. When the appointments on the calendar have past, the icon comes up near the top of my homescreen when the keyboard locks. When I unlock, the icon disappears. I even tried deleting the appointments from my calendar, but they still show up.
