    The contacts may need cleaning.

    Pop your trackball out and take a pin or toothpick and press down on the middle of the plate. Does it make a clicking sound? If it does the contacts need cleaning.

    The piece on the circuit board. There should be a small copper colored square on the motherboard in the middle of where the trackball sits.
