lak611 has it right (as usual). You enter the password incorrectly (usually 10 times - but this is settable). The phone will then ask you to enter the word " blackberry ". The phone will now reset, wipe al the previous owner's data but will leave the applications in place.
You will then get a BlackBerry that is usable again.
Why did the previous owner not either tell you the password or, remove it?
