Memory cards will not format

I have my friends 8100 BB Pearl and I cannot get the memory card to format. I have used 3 different cards. 2 2GB's and 1 1GB and both come up format failed. What am I doing that is wrong? I also upgraded the phone, which was never upgraded before. Thanks in advance.

the odds of 3 failing are a million to 1. Replace the BB, it is a hardware failure on the device itself.

Replace the phone. There has to be a better way.
