From where are you downloading the device OS?
After you download the OS did you install it on the computer?
Did you delete the vendor.xml file from the computer?
What "components" is it saying are missing? And where are you seeing that message?

Well, you need to delete the vendor.xml file.

What version of BlackBerry Desktop Manager? And try using the Loader.exe file instead of BlackBerry Desktop Manager.

Try a different computer.

Actually, we could use a bit more information. Who is your carrier? Are you downloading your carrier's official OS through the RIM site? Is your 8100 actually branded to your carrier? If so, there is no need to worry about the vendor.xml file. If not, that's when you need to find and delete the file.

Also the question "what version of the Desktop Manager do you have" is valid. As is the question of whether you are using DM or the standalone "loader.exe" program. Just to give us a better idea of what's going on.

I think pretty much every carrier that had the 8100 offers OS 4.5 now. Even AT&T's last update was to build 182 in early 2010. And I think they first released 4.5 in 2008.

You could try downloading it again and re-installing it on your computer. One or more of the files could have become corrupted and you may have to try again.

I've used DM 6 to update my previous 8100 to that last OS build from AT&T, so I know that it works.

One other thing comes to mind. Although you may have already tried it. Otherwise, I'm at a loss.

You could simply try another usb port to hook up your phone to. Some say you shouldn't hook up through a hub, but connect to a port on or going directly to the motherboard. I don't know how valid that is as I often connected to a port through my monitor (which is a hub). Even if your connection is not through a hub, just try another port anyway, just to be sure.
