Unhappy how to make sure i'm not using the internet

I just got my Pearl 8120 today. I bought it off of ebay unlocked to put my sim card in. I currently have AT&T. I do not have a data plan, so I do not want to use internet, since it would cost me ridiculous amounts of money. How can I be sure that I am not connected to the internet? I have had issues in the past with phones connecting without my knowledge and racking up a huge phone bill. Is there a way I can tell? Or a setting I can change to ensure that it never goes on any internet? I haven't tried setting up the wifi yet, I have heard mixed reviews on whether or not it even works without a data plan. I don't necessarily need to use wifi, I am just concerned that I am connected to the internet.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: I should also mention that under options>mobile network i have tried to turn data services off, and my connection preference to wifi only. however then it does not recognize my mobile network, it says *None* this also turns off any capabilities like calling and message. It says off in the upper right hand corner.

When I have my data services turned off, and set to wifi preferred, it seems like it still might be accessing the internet somehow, as it still reads as my network being "edge" in the upper right hand corner. I read somewhere that it should say 3G if you are not connected to anything.

Also, is there a way I can make sure no apps are accessing the internet without my permission?

For now, I have my BB turned off just in case. Ugh.

If you don't have a data plan it can't connect - you must have BIS through your carrier for it to work. Only third party apps will be able to work if they're wifi.

If you have activated a BlackBerry on the AT&T network in the US, they will automatically add the data plan to your account.

That I didn't know, thanks. Out of curiosity I called Verizon, they'll do the same thing. Not sure where I got off base, but corrected going forward.

AT&T does an IMEI sweep and will add a data plan onto your account automatically and from what I've heard they add the most expensive one possible
