In the Phone, press the menu key > Options > Smart Dialing, change the "Country Code" to +1 and "National Number Length to 10

I should have looked at your carrier, and I would not have told you to change it to +1, Lol!
Glad you are set, and welcome to CB!

Regards all,
Welcome!
Since the instructions for the Pearl didn't help, may I recommend you post your question on the 8900 forum. You can find it here:

Go to your recent dial numbers > options > smart dial option > country code

set whichever you want to

Go to dial number by click on dialing button on the home page
then press menu tab and select options
then smart dial option then choose your country code and you are ready to go
