blackberry power problem.

hey i have a blackberry 8100. it worked great. and i really love it. suddenly during the day i took it out of my pocket and it had shut off. now it wont turn back on, it has been really finicky with charging as well. the red led light will stay on for about 5 seconds. then shut off. is it charging? i tried my usb cable thing, it does the same. the computer makes the sound like it becomes connected to the computer, then gets disconnected. if i take the battery out, then put it on the charger the screen lights up with, with a battery sign in the middle with a red slash going through it. Whats up with this? i have tried reloading the OS, but it cant connect long enough to the computer. please help. thanks so much.
