unlocked branded Pearl 9100 3G questions

I have an unlocked device, originally Telus canadian, now being used in US on AT&T and I haven't been able to update the bb using bb desktop. When I connect to the desktop I get a "upgrade available for bb 5.0.0 core applications" message then when i click ok and it checks my device I get a message "no software update is required for your device" message. Not sure if that's the case or if it is unrecognized and therefore not upgradeable. Current OS is v5.0.0.604.
Any thoughts??

Did you download and install the Device OS to your computer?

Note that the latest Telus release is 5.0.0.604.
The latest AT&T release is 5.0.0.921.

I'm sorry to say I'm not sure what you mean by download and install on computer. I do have bb desktop installed previously from my prior bb flip device and just plugged the new Pearl in and put my info on new device when I got it. I have not downloaded anything specific to this Pearl since switching over to it.
I didn't realize the bb OS was carrier dependent. I'm using my ATT chip in this unlocked phone so it's unofficial and unsupported by ATT (purchased before ATT had 9100 in US and switched from T-mo in order to have 3G!)

Ok.

In BlackBerry Desktop Manager, the default update shown to you will be the latest officially released OS version by the carrier to which the device is branded.

In your case, it's not showing any update because you have the latest official release by Telus already installed on the device.

The carrier with which you are currently using the device doesn't have any bearing on it.

If you wish to update the device OS to one other than that officially released by the carrier to which the device is branded, you must download and install the DEVICE OS to your computer.
