Questions for potential buyer
Howdy,
I'm thinking of buying a Pearl 9100 and I have a few questions.
1) Is there a notification sound for unread texts and messages? My old Samsung would beep once every 15 minutes until I'd read the text or called my voice mail. If this isn't present in the default OS, is there an app that could fill the void?
2) Can I tell the Pearl stay off of 3g? I'm a cheapskate so I don't get wireless data, I just use wifi networks. I'd like to be able to set the phone not to download stuff via the cell network unless I tell it to.
3) Can I use the Pearl without a computer? My home machine is an Ubuntu box, so I can't really use a windows/mac based sync tools. I'd like to be able to sync over wifi with my Google Calendar and Mail accounts.
thanks! - 11-13-2010, 11:47 AM #2
I do believe there is apps for the text sounds. Not sure what they are called but I think there are.
2it can stay off of 3g but then there is edge. I'm pretty sure you have to have data in order to use a BlackBerry but I have "heard" different. But you can limit the data off of wifi.
3 yes you can use it w/o a comp. You can update over the air too. But as far as sync over wifi that will be extermely limited. And as far as google goes as long as its updated online your BlackBerry will be able to sync with those accnts

If you don't have a data plan, it will show "edge". When you have a data plan, it will show "EDGE" (in mayorcase). I've some friends who have a Blackberry but they haven't a data plan, and they haven't any problems. In order to use wifi to get emails and sync your data, you have to create a BIS account, and sign in when you connect via wifi.
For the sound, instead, blackberries have a notification led who keeps you informed. I think you'll get used to it, but is it possible that there is a software who does what you want.
Last, of course it can be used without a desktop pc. Almost all the things can be done via OTA. - 11-17-2010, 01:04 AM #4
