Default Blackberry 9100 Thoughts

I have been thinking about getting the Blackberry 9100 and want some advice. I have done some research on the 9100 and see it has been doing pretty well. Here are a couple questions for you all:

1. For all the people who own this device, what do you like and not like about it?

2. I currently have T-mobile, is this phone capable of running on 3g just as well as AT&T?

3. I feel Blackberries tend to have a lower quality build, not so bad but just a tad bit...so, does the 9100 feel a little more solid and sturdy? You know that feeling of having a solid phone in your hand? Eh?

4. Back to T-mobile, I have seen some posts about getting UMA on the 9100, is it possible to do this with OS 6?

5. Speaking of the OS 6, how does the 9100 perform running on OS 6?

6. What is your guys' feeling on the battery life? A little short? Or somewhat generous?

7. Where is the best place to buy this phone particularly for T-mobile?

Those are my (numerous) questions for right now. I'm trying to figure out my next phone and hoping this will finalize my decision. I really love the look of this phone and its features, hoping this might be the one.

Thanks in advance.

I can only speak to the Tmobile/3g questions:
Tmo and ATT use different frequencies for their 3g bandwidth. This means that an ATT 9100 won't get 3g if unlocked to Tmo. AFAIK the only North American service providers who use the same frequency as TMo are Cincinnati Bell, and Wind Mobile. So if you live in/near Southern Ohio or the Canadian cites that Wind has a presence in you can get one that will work on Tmo.

Default My thoughts on my 9100

1. For all the people who own this device, what do you like and not like about it?

Not much not to like, what I like mostly is the ability to do things with one hand, and a set of fingers, I haven't needed to use both hands unlike when I was on my 8900.

2. I currently have T-mobile, is this phone capable of running on 3g just as well as AT&T?

Tri-band UMTS networks: (800/850)/1900/2100 or 900/1700/2100 MHz so pick and choose your network wisely.

3. I feel Blackberries tend to have a lower quality build, not so bad but just a tad bit...so, does the 9100 feel a little more solid and sturdy? You know that feeling of having a solid phone in your hand? Eh?

Hmm quite cheapish looking but I have dropped it a few times and it is still going strong.

4. Back to T-mobile, I have seen some posts about getting UMA on the 9100, is it possible to do this with OS 6?

No idea, as we don't have this service here.

5. Speaking of the OS 6, how does the 9100 perform running on OS 6?

on .424 beautiful, on .448 could be better. We seem to run OS6 better than the 9700 brother.

6. What is your guys' feeling on the battery life? A little short? Or somewhat generous?

I am a heavy user on OS 6, so battery is average. I have 9 email accounts pushing and loads of apps running in background.

1. For all the people who own this device, what do you like and not like about it?

I bought my fist 9100 and I love it, then I had the opportunity to get a Toch so I got the Torch, less than 2 weeks later I came back to the 9100. Love the size, love Surtype, looks awesome...

2. I currently have T-mobile, is this phone capable of running on 3g just as well as AT&T?

I'm from Venezuela so can't say anything here. Though I know AT&T and T-Mo have different 3G Bands, like Tiassa said, you'll have to get de Wind Mobile or Cincinnati Bell 9100.

3. I feel Blackberries tend to have a lower quality build, not so bad but just a tad bit...so, does the 9100 feel a little more solid and sturdy? You know that feeling of having a solid phone in your hand? Eh?

The build quality on the first 9100 was not as good as this second one, with the first one I had the same probem as many of the users in here that some dust would go under the screen. I've had my second 9100 for a little over a month now and I can tell you that this one is perfect!!! Not a single point of dust under my screen.

4. Back to T-mobile, I have seen some posts about getting UMA on the 9100, is it possible to do this with OS 6?

Don't know, I'm from Venezuela and we dont have UMA.

5. Speaking of the OS 6, how does the 9100 perform running on OS 6?

I've installed every single OS6 leak and I can tell you it still have some bugs but the latest leak 6.0.0.424 is the best one out there. Performs good overall.

6. What is your guys' feeling on the battery life? A little short? Or somewhat generous?

I'm a prety hevy user so if I use it in 2G last me all day, on 3G about 12-14 hours.

7. Where is the best place to buy this phone particularly for T-mobile?

Dont know, I'm from Venezuela...

Hope that helps!!!

I have looked online and found an international version that has been unlocked. Here it is: amazon.com/Blackberry-9100-Pearl-3G-GPS--International/dp/B0049Z2ER4/ref=sr_1_8?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1296488837&sr=1-8. Is this device the one I should get?

And ngc, how many versions of the 9100 are there? You mention ''first one'' and ''second one''....has there been an updated version?

If it is the international Pearl, it will have the AT&T 3G bands. I have an international 9100. I love it even though I only get EDGE on T-Mobile.

I awaited the 9100 since I found out of it's announcement & it's been well worth the wait, it's been an absolute treat to use. The one thing that I do not like about the 9100 is that I do a lot of texting and with the 9100 you have to select a contact before you can start your text message. Starting a text message with a contact name already chosen makes it far easier to send the massage off prematurely, well at least for me anyways. Just to many things to list that I like though.

The actual build quality has been a issue. One of the things you should check before you leave the store is the area between the keyboard and the screen. Their are units that have a gap between the two allowing dust under the screen where it can't be reached to be cleaned. All so make sure that it does properly power up.

I'm in Canada two of our biggest providers that carry the 9100 or Rogers which is charging $100 more and Bell which is... well this is still on going story. http://forums.crackberry.com/f160/2-hours-hold-571613/

The overall performance, style & features of the 9100 will leave you thoroughly pleased.

I remembered I couldn't wait to get the Blackberry Pearl 9100. Although I still like it, I am seriously considering selling it. Since I have small hands, I do love the pearl because it is small, but its just not sturdy. I feel that I can just break the phone in half with 1 hand. I do love suretype and the qwerty keyboard, but I think its about time I get a little bit heavier phone.

I was thinking about this too. Do you think the Bold 9780 is much sturdier and feels like a heavier/better build? How much thicker is the 9780 compared to the 9100?

I am jumping for a while to a white 9700, and found a lot more apps are available for qwerty devices than that of suretype like ours. Hmmm
