Default 9100 Battery with X on it

So I have set up 50 or so blackberry's for users. Whenever I take them out of the box they have at least half battery life.

This is the first time I'm setting up a 9100. It didn't power on when I put the battery in. The instructions say to charge it for a bit before powering on if it doesn't power straight away.

When I plug it into the wall, I get an empty looking battery with a red X through it. The manual doesn't say anything about this symbol so I'm not sure why they bother to have it.

Does it mean that the batter isn't being recognized or that it has to charge from being totally empty? What's the go?

    Is this thing screwed?

I'm having this exact issue but with a different origin. My phone was fine overnight when I left it to charge. First thing in the morning, I checked the time and unplugged it and it went dark. I pulled the battery to hard reset it and have been getting the battery symbol with an X over it.

Usually the x means a dead battery
