I know everyone probably hasn't looked at the USB input at the bottom of their Passport in as much depth as I have, but if you do you will notice a divot at the 'back' of the slot outwards in the middle.

Just curious if anyone can elaborate on either the USB 3.0 cable news (yes, it had been commented by BlackBerry before you tell me they never said anything.), or on the reason for that divot if not for 3.0 compatibility.

    Thanks!

I'd take a picture, but don't have another device easily accessible here!

No such thing for the Passport. It doesn't have the required hardware (an additional port) for USB 3.0.

    End of story.

Can anyone explain the non-uniform Micro-USB port design then?

This is just a guess, but maybe it's due to Slimport accommodation.

    The Passport has USB 3.0

You can get any USB 3.0 cable for it. It doesn't need to be BlackBerry branded.

Not true. There are not 'normal' USB 3.0 microusb cables. The only USB 3.0 microusb cables have about an additional half-inch to the side of the normal microusb piece.

Some Samsung phones use those ones, the same ones that USB 3.0 HD's use.

Our Passports use some other cable, possibly proprietary to BlackBerry, based off microusb.

    How does that work..?

The USB port that it requires is the extra wide style, the same type that external HD's use, our port physically is not large enough to use that..

    Being blunt.
Put the male part into the female opening at the bottom of the phone.
    LOL

I mean since that's a generic USB 3.0 end with half of it being a normal Microusb, the other half being the extra part for being "3.0".

The Passport doesn't have that extra slot, so how does it work?

Pretty sure he meant that he plugs in the standard microusb cable that came with the Passport into the female standard usb port of the adapter, and then connects the micro usb 3.0 end to the hard-drive/whatever.

Resulting in a fallback usb 2.0 connection I suppose.

    You're kidding right?

You plug in the cable that came with the Passport into the passport microusb, THEN you plug in the other end (a standard usb) into the female standard usb port of the adapter,.. and finally you plug in the male micro usb 3.0 end of the adapter into the female micro usb 3.0 port of the compatible device (like a modern harddrive).

So we're just getting 2.0 speeds but "saying" it's 3.0?

Basically, yes. I believe the person that posted that link misunderstood the point of the thread.... or actually thinks they are getting usb 3.0 speeds with that adapter.

On a Windows PC I would expect the message "This device could perform faster..." when a USB3 device is plugged into a USB2 port. For disk drives and whatnot this is normally the case.

There was one device out in prototype-land which did show a USB3 connection as I recall - I am not sure it was a Passport- maybe it was a Z30. It was almost a year ago when that picture showed up. I think someone found it on ebay ?

<EDIT: FOUND THE LINK;> BlackBerry Z30 prototype shows up on Craigslist with a USB 3.0 port ? NerdBerry

Plus, that's OTG with the hard drive; which is not what OP wants. I'd also like a BlackBerry device with 3.0. That, and a SanDisk Extreme Pro.

Okay good, so we're clear and I'm not going crazy lol

Yeah I'm wondering about the port on the Passport. Anyone who know whether or not it's actually 3.0 and/or why there's that intentional divot at the back, please post!

Yeah, those are the external USB 3.0 ones, like for Galaxy devices or external Hard Drives, not the BlackBerry Passport..
