When I do the universal search, and then go into an app whenever I return to the universal search the next time, the last search I did remains there.

How do I get rid of this?

Try : Open up Universal Search, swipe down, tap Settings, clear history.
P.S: same goes with BlackBerry assistant (10.3) for usage history (at the very bottom of the settings screen).

In the history on in the text line? I think if you keep it open it stays in the text field but if you close universal search it goes away. Run into this problem too. Little annoying.
