Alrightie tried it and I think I may be on to something here !

when screen is locked and not lit, swiping over Q W and O P will not wake it but if you swipe over E R T Y U I keys unlocks the device for me.

Now for the funny bit, with the device locked and screen lit you can swipe from Q to P to unlock the device (screen has to be lit).

    Can anyone confirm
Yes. Same here. Seems Blackberry definitely did all this on purpose.

Nice to find out that swiping certain places on the screen is required. I've just been finding the whole process of wake swipes more problematic that it should be. It's the one GUI area where I find myself envious of my wife's Classic.

BTW, typing u and then the return key wakes it too.

    Thanks OP!

I always ran into this when trying to hang up the phone, and now know why.

    I reckon it's more like a feature than a bug ...

Sorry to hear you guys just figured this out. Since BlackBerry 10 has been released they have always stated to swipe up from the middle.

I think most of us knew this already. But for me, it's more natural to swipe above the letter U due to a bigger screen of passport.

Was it always like this? Just more recently I was having "trouble" waking it up, but what you said works. So I turned on the lift to wake and really like that feature

Interesting. Makes sense not to look at the extremities, but why ERTY and not UI? If UI is sketchy, then so should ER...

w1ndex11 mentioned his Z30, so I tried my Z10. The swipe to unlock feature only works above the word Blackberry, not on either side. You learn something new every day.

same here - I always thought it was down to me not swiping from the right place when using my left hand.....

And... just realised that on the keyboard BB10 devices, if you're lazy to swipe to wake, simply press "U" and the screen will wake up. Press U+Enter (within 2 seconds) it will bring you to the password screen to unlock. So handy particularly when you're walking or running..

Remember all the threads about pocket dials? Obviously limiting the swipe area to the centre of the screen is a design choice to minimise the possibility of pocket dialling.

If swiping when the screen is off would work for the whole screen, it would become way too easy to accidentally trigger something with the phone in your pocket.

When the screen is lit (lockscreen) swiping works from the entire screen again.

My passport wakes up by a small flick up from any base point on the screen.

This confirms my suspicions too. I noticed that I could swipe my passport awake when it was in my left hand but not my right. Thanks for this.

Confused, is everyone trying to swipe ON the keyboard or from the screen? I've noticed that sometimes it takes two tries.

With the lower bezel being so small, I personally swipe from half-on-top of the keys because my fingers are quite fat. I can swipe from the bezel only but like I said it's easier for me to just start over the keys.
In any case it works either way. I am however liking the 'U' + 'Enter' feature that I just read about in this thread today.

I actually have switched off the feature as it would unlock my phone in the pocket. Now I'm used to pressing U to see the lock screen.
